I heard the Gardens on Myrtle between Hall and Ryerson was a pretty cool dive bar, but I never paid it a visit. And now it’s closed.
Opening in its place is something called Boiling Kettle. A kind reader sent me these photos:

Intriguing garden statue…
Anyone have more information? I swore I was going to spend all week scoping the ‘hood, but laziness and a cold have impeded my goals…

I heard the Gardens was pretty wack – I love dives (and the accompanying cheap drinks), but a friend told me to stay away. In my expert opinion, it looks like a store.
I also heard Gardens was lame and I’ll pretty much drink anywhere. In another note the brightly painted yellow building next to the old porn store is also being remodelled inside. Heard anything about that?
Now there’s an awning up that says “vespers”, so i guess that’s the name of this new place!
wait, it says “Vesper”
Mrytle has some pretty great restaurants…am I the only one who would like to see a nice “upscale” bar on the Ave?
an upscale bar would be fantastic
Upscale, but not cheesy. Here’s hoping…
was in Vesper last night. seemed nice but bland, not much charactor in the place. and a budweiser was $5 bucks! all the finishes are nice though and it still smells like a fresh coat of paint. i’m sure the garden will add during the summertime too.
Oooo! It’s open?!
cool! I may drop by this weekend then…
i somehow managed to miss the new Vesper on my stroll down myrtle this afternoon… hmmm…
maybe i’m too post-college to understand the concept of “upscale bar”, but rope is nice on myrtle (though often crowded with pratt kids), and chez lola has a nice bar in a more upscale atmosphere, as well. if you’re willing to trek a bit, Stonehome and that new sportsbar over on Lafayette are as yupped out as it gets, in my opinion, and Moe’s strikes a damn good balance between dive and swank. Olea, also on Lafayette, has a good and very upscale bar, too. i’ve never drank at Red Bamboo or Chez Oscar on Dekalb, but both have relatively swank bar areas. Smooch has a liquor liscense, i think (?), and the new Pillow Cafe will, as well.
personally, anything more upscale than Stonehome and I’m wondering why you’re looking in Clinton Hill? the 4 or 5 at Nevins puts you all of 10 minutes from the Campbell Apartment, which is one of the most “upscale” bars in the city.
Dropped by on Saturday night with a few friends – bland is right. I know they just opened, but thus far, devoid of character. Watched the end of the Seahawks-Cowboys game on a nice flat-screen TV, which was nice. They don’t take credit cards, which isn’t nice. Now that I think of it, I did pay 27 bucks for three drinks (one Stella, one vodka-cranberry, one Chardonay), which is a little more expensive than my cheap a$$ usually likes to pay. Oh well.
I won’t be back for a while, hoping they “character-it-up.”
Ended up at Rope…
I had a memorable night with some close friends at Gardens 9/11/01, blunts at the bar, gambling in the garden, F16′s doing flyovers, a very mixed crowd. It had a bland decor then but it had a pool table as well. Vesper looks like a business with no character at present, it’s only amenity being the garden out back, I can’t imagine it will be open for long.
