When I inherited a car this past summer, I tried to park it in the Armory garage on Vanderbilt. Despite a sign outside saying they had monthly spots available, I was told that wasn’t so when I actually drove the car over there. The sign’s still up, and prices have gone UP from around $170:

WTF?
Other area garages include DMK on Waverly between Myrtle and Park for $190/mo, Central Parking garage near that Applebee’s off the DeKalb subway stop (which I hear is slightly cheaper and offers the first month free), and some guy who owns a bunch of private garages on Vanderbilt between Greene and Gates and is asking almost $300 a month per garage.

I just park on the street… Some nights it is a real pain, but usually I fare pretty well. It was HORRIBLE after our mini storm a few weeks back – my street (Willoughby Walk) was absolutely horrible for about a week until one day while skidding my way down Willoughby, I saw a monstrous pile of salt… 4 ft high, no joke… in the middle of the street. I have no idea what was going on (Pratt maybe taking matters into their own hands?), but the street was better later in the day.
But yeah, street parking is free!
I’ve been parking on the street in CH for about 6 years. My car has been broken into twice, and I’ve gotten a handfull of tickets (most of which I was able to fight successfully). And it’s gotten a lot of little dents and dings. All in all, not too bad, but I would think twice about street parking if I had a nice new car.
We had a car up until about a year ago when it was hit in front of our place on Classon. It was totaled, we got the insurance settlement and decided that we would go carless. No regrets so far. I say sell it and buy a bike.
perhaps this is why many people who live here do not own cars.
Walk as much as you can good for you and for everybody!!!You don’t need a car in Ny! be green about it, save money and stress and when you need a car to go away or ….. get a zipcar,
Yeah my car is a 96 with 160,000 miles, dents, the driver side door is missing its key cylinder, and until recently, my windshield wipers didn’t work… I’m not worried about anyone breaking in
The car is inherited and comes in handy when I drive outside the city. But it’s true, I rarely use it. If it weren’t already paid off, I would not have kept it. I agree, having a car in NYC is usually not worth it.
I live at the Armory, and also was told they dont have monthly space, even though the sign advertises that they do. No deal for residents either.
Our car was hit a year or so ago in front our place on Classon. It was totaled, we got the insurance payment and decided to just remain car free. No regrets. We usually just rent cars and are looking into http://www.zipcar.com for small errand type things.
Car ownership is a liability in every sense of the word (even more so if you financed it). I just rent/zip cars when I need to, with no regrets. Am I missing something – what’s the advantage of owning?
The advantage to woning is coming and going as you please. Plus there is no dealing with the MTA. I ahbore public transportation. Atleast in my car if someone sneezes on me….it will be ME who sneezes!!
Hmm I might choose someplace else to live if I was afraid of public transportation…
Ok owning in NYC can be a HUGE pain and at times, very impractical. But to say there are NO benefits is absolutely ridiculous. I can go shopping for big box items at Target/Home Depot/Wherever. I can visit friends in CT/NJ and my girlfriend’s family in Long Island. I can visit my mom’s grave in PA. And I can do all these things without worrying about schedules, tickets, or paying an exhorbitant amount for car rentals and insurance. Would I buy a new car? No. My car was purchased by my parents with three kids, school and trip pickups, and later visiting all three of us at college in CT and MA (a little too often), and my mother’s family in PA once a month. I use it to goto Mohegan Sun when the mood suits me. It comes in handy, so people shouldn’t be so quick to judge. If you have a friend with a car, I bet you are dying for a ride whenever you can get one.
Now, driving to work in NYC every day, that might be crazy for most of us. And I am strongly in favor of having tolls on bridges and in midtown Manhattan to ease congestion and for revenue generation.
mhol22, this is satire right?
strictly
I have to second BrooklynZoo on the friends wanting rides. I wouldn’t have bought my car, but I inherited it and it has extreme sentimental value. I never drive into Manhattan, but damn, it’s nice to drive to Fairway when I want to.
Sorry about the double post. The first one didn’t show up for some reason.
I had a car in Brooklyn for a while, and it was a nuisance most of the time (dealing with either switching sides of the street constantly and with ticketing, vandalism and theft or paying for a space in a lot). It was almost worth it, though, when I wanted to go away for a week or two, which would have been too pricey with a rental car. Now I am carless and rent when necessary. This situation is mostly more practical than owning a car in NYC, but it makes you think twice about the expense of doing anything with a car (which can hamper one’s spontanaeity). Also, in addition to the expense, rental cars can be less pleasant to drive than one’s own car (you have to get used to each car’s quirks, and this probably makes them less safe to drive). Plus the rental places use noxious cleaning fluids that make me feel sick almost the whole time I’m in my pricey NYC rental. So, in summary, I think there’s no great solution to the rental/ owning/ public transport dilemma in NYC, but each has its merits and downsides.
really, convenience is the only benefit of car ownership in the city. that’s all, and though it’s not evil to like convenience, it sure is hard to work up any sympathy from non-car owners over things like parking issues. unless you offer them rides! that should be mandatory!
I’ll take my plush leather seats over a crowded C-train or a cold bus stop any day
if you want a place to park, it might be far from you but if you don’t use it too often, the parking garage in the newswalk (pacific st, between carlton and 6th ave) has signs for monthly parking and i recall it being pretty cheap, and there are a few garages on underhill around st. marks in ph that we use zipcars from that might have space.
zipcar’s great if you need to drive to Union Square, not so much for driving out of state. I just got a cheap little beater and parking on the street, though not ideal, is easy enough for the price. It would be better if you only had to move it twice a week like in Carol Gardens.
Yeah for out of state driving we rent from All Car Rent-a-car on Warren St (they have other locations) which is a good $20-40 cheaper than Enterprise. They have nice cars and it’s easy to pick up / drop off from there (short walk to/from the G train or B52 bus).
Parking on the street must be a pain fror those that do not drive to work because you have to constantly follow asp. I drive to work, so my car is gone before I would have to move for asp. The other draw back is that too many people damage other cars with their poor parking skills! Luckily, I drive an old banger anyway, but if I didnt I would look for a garage for sure.
Other than the above, the independence and convenience of car ownership is worth the hassle.
I’m sorry, I’ll take the tickets and high parking fees while I sit in my luxury car over sitting on the dirty subway, or walking out in the cold anyday.
Lesterhead: do you know how to get in touch with this character on Vanderbilt with the garages? Thanks.

Zipcar sounds like a great alternative to paying for parking or the high cost of rental cars. I’m wondering, though, whether it is difficult to get a Zipcar reservation on weekends. Can anyone who already uses Zipcar provide some insight?
