Months ago, we discovered something that looked like a new bar on Waverly between Fulton and Atlantic. I recently found someone inside, who gave me this promo card:

“Who Knew.” Argh! Despite this list of events being alphabetical, it’s kind of odd that baby showers would be listed first. I’m not sure what a Preemie Martini is, but I hope it’s not referring to babies born early.
Anyhow, the inside does, in fact, look pretty cool, so maybe someone out there in CH wants to host their baby shower there and report back? And of course, their website is not up yet.

One more comment on the phone number. For those of us who have BlackBerries, we cannot dial-by-letter. Please, just tell me what the actual number is.

Thanks for the tip. You might want to check how you’re forming your links, though. The last couple posts have had malformed URLs. In the one you are linking to http://www.clintonhillblog.com/www.jelanilounge.com, which makes me think you are not putting the http:// before the website. If you don’t put http:// before the link, then the browser thinks the resource is coming from your local server.
Again, a case of diminishing your desirability with amatuerish promotional materials. This seems endemic in CH/FG.
Movie Screens? Shouldn’t that be “screenings?” And naming a drink “Preemie Martini” is so wrongheaded I don’t know how or where to begin. Furthermore, thgeir logo looks as if it were done by someone with no knowledge of design whatsoever and a ballpoint pen and french curve. What gives, people?
I hate sounding like a snob ( and I’m fully aware that I do sound like a snob, so no need to call it to my attention, thanks) but when I see promotional materials like this I reflexively think it reflects on the professionalism and dedication of the proprieter. If you think advertising isn’t important you’re really missing the boat.
I like the graphic on their card what are you talking about Queen???
I don’t think it’s so ugly. I would bet, houseofwax, and I’m basing this solely on your post and nothing else… which means i could be totally wrong… that they are not shooting for your demographic anyway.
And, CHB – the list isn’t in alphabetic order…
Houseowax, I’m totally with you on this one. The fact that they list baby showers and martinis on the same promotional material is gross. Ew. Ew. Double Ew.
Less hating & pissing contents please – you just sound like an idiot.
Thanks, Sean- didn’t know why that was happening. BklnZoo- you’re right, which makes it even weirder to list baby showers first!
Well, like I said: I know I sound like a snob, but I don’t think I sound like a ‘hater’ or and ‘idiot’. Or, for that matter, a ‘queen’.
What’s wrong with the logo is this: it’s clearly done by someone with little or no knowledge of graphic design and production. The color matching, fonts, weight and placement all belie it’s attempt to look legitimate. The logo is done in pen, but not in a way that looks intentional. The copywriting is clumsy, grammatically incorrect, and reveals an atempt to be all things to all people that smacks of desperation.
Maybe they’re not catering to my demo- but they ARE a neighborhood place and I’m in the neighborhood. Isn’t my dollar as green as anyone elses?
There’s no implied ethnic, economic or interest group here- if it were called “Biggie’s Hip-Hop Lounge” or “Slim’s Arkansas Sippin’ Shack” or even “Shabby Chic Hideaway” I would infer that it’s probably not for me.
Lastly, I stand by my assessment of the “Preemie Martini” as probably the most uncomfortable drink name in the history of alcohol. Followed by the “Low Fetal Birthweight Bellini”
Preemie drink is pretty hard to defend. But give me some time and I can surely come up with a few less tasteful drink names
My only point about demographics is that I can imagine many many people having no problem whatsoever with that promo card, even if it does look amateurish to some of you.
ha last sentence made me laugh, house.
Here Lesterhead let me help you out – you can print this and keep it in your wallet in case you ever get stuck: The one key does not contain any letters, starting with the two key (ABC) each of the subsequent keys contain three letters except for the 9 which had 4.
With having Pratt so close I guess everybody in CH has become a design expert.
If you press ALT and then the letter, the Blackberry will automatically dial the corresponding number for you.
my main problem with the logo is that it’s actually confusing. on first look, i thought the bar was called lelani lounge. the J in the logo, especially, really doesn’t read as a letter at all.
also, considering that “baby shower” is first on the list and the preemie martini is in bold, the message i take away from the back of the card is that it’s some kind of bar for young mothers, or something. which is, um, an odd demographic. the copy reads like it was written by someone whose first language isn’t english, which is ok, i guess, though not really what you want to go with when you’re opening up a lounge in an area where english is the predominant language.
given the choice I would prefer a martini at any baby showers I have to attend.

I love Jelani Lounge and the website is up now..so check it out.
The decor is nice, the owner is cute and very polite. Since you two are neighbors, you should meet. I am sure it would be civil.
Jelani Lounge is a nice place to visit. First, you shouldn’t judge a place by hear say. If you haven’t been there to judge for yourself you opinion is void. I’ve seen the promo card and I didn’t get the message that has been posted on this blog. I thought they were promoting the events that can be hosted at their location. As far as the preemie martini, the owner gave his reason for the titled drink. So I see as a celebration that their child is doing well. What so bad about celebrating? Also you guys are helping promote the place. Maybe the owners should thank you, if they read this mess.
