Remember that bodega on the southwest corner of Waverly and Greene? The one with the green storefront that closed down and emptied out when the building went up for sale? Looks like a restaurant is in the works, AND they’ve applied for a liquor license. Is this allowed, being so close to the school? I guess it is if they’ve applied. Wonder what kind of cuisine this will be, and what the clientèle will be. Students getting sandwiches after school? Or a place for nice dinners?
I originally fantasized about this decrepit storefront turning into something interesting, so I may *almost* get my wish. We shall see…

The pizzaria just up Waverly seems to keep the kids happy, so I’d guess the restaurateurs are looking more upscale, especially if they’re seeking a full liquor license, which is expensive and time-consuming. The proximity to the school should not be a problem, since it’s the distance between the ENTRANCE of the school and the ENTRANCE to the restaurant that must exceed a statutory minimum. The fact that the playground is right across the street is irrelevant; the bodega had a beer license.
Residents of long-standing (I’ve been here 26 years) can remember when that corner was a drug market with a history of random shootings. A clerk at the Yemeni deli next to the dry cleaners was shot to death right after I moved in. Today, the owner lets his wife and daughter staff the cash register.
This is all well and good, but I moved here to escape the yuppies….
