So, I called the 88th Precinct and said, have you heard about the rash of break-ins lately and have you done anything about it? (I used the word “rash” because it seems like there have been a lot based on the comments.) And the officer informed me that when lots of people call to report break-ins, they do put more cops on the street or in cars patrolling the street to stop them. But people don’t always report them… so it continues to happen. And he wasn’t aware of any “rash” of break-ins, which tells me people are being too quiet about it. So, if your car has been broken into, or you know someone whose car has been broken into, have them report it. The number is 718-636-6511.

Also call the community board to let them know. They have meetings specifically about crime in the area. They will put pressure on the precinct. Obviously the precinct would prefer that these crime go unreported.
This is Clintoncentric (in case the name shows up different!) I just called CB2 (718-596-5410) and they said that I was the first person who had called to tell them about this and that they would tell the community affairs officer at the precinct about this… we’ll see what happens.
One night last week (or was it earlier this week? shit) three cars were broken into on my block, then two more the next night. Walking down the sidewalk there was actually more broken glass than dog shit! That’s a LOT of glass. One time last spring I sat at my desk in the middle of the day during the week watching a guy cassing cars on the other side of the block, then he started trying to jimmy the door on a car, then finally smashed the window – I was on the phone to 911 by then and no foolin’ within 45 seconds of picking up the phone two cop cars converged on the guy and nabbed him as he tried to walk away. So I’m standing there in my apartment telling the 911 operator, Yeah, that’s the guy, as they hold the guy and I see the cop listening to his radio, then nods and cuffs the guy. Yay me! Oh, yeah – uh, Hall St twixt Willoughby and Dekalb. Never park there.
I’ve had my car (’94 Jeep Grand Cherokee…not exactly anything to get excited about) broken into 3 times – once on Carlton b/w Dekalb and Lafayette, once on Washington Park between Willoughby and Dekalb, and once on Dekalb between So. Oxford and So. Portland.
Lesson: it’s gonna happen no matter where you park. Even with a club on the steering wheel and no stereo in the car – and obvious even in the dark that that’s the case – it’s gonna happen.
Just life in the big city, I suppose.
Speaking of…the police were walking around door to door today asking if anyone heard screams around 2:30pm…followed by several other police cars on the street…followed by helicopters. Hmm.
Relative’s headlights were vandalized recently. Parked on clinton bet. myrtle & willoughby. Crime may be down 80% over ten years, but there’s still plenty to go around, I guess.
Clintoncentric here. Another car window was smashed on Irving Pl. last night. I called the cops, and the guy who answered said they were in fact aware of the break-ins and have been sending a “Grand Larceny” patrol car out at night for the past month in response to the break-ins (maybe they need to add like 3 or four?!). Obviously one isnt’ working ,I’m calling the CB again to tell them that.

Gothamist has an attempted abduction at Myrtle and Emerson yesterday afternoon if that is around your area.
My car was stolen, in spite of an anti-theft “secret starter” device and an unlocked club on the steering wheel, from DeKalb at the corner of So. Portland. This was 2 years ago or so, and they found the guy while he was driving the car because it also had LoJack. I think parking on a park block(in this case Fort Greene Park) is a little riskier than other areas because people can easily slip into the park and disappear if necessary. I lived on the edge of a park in Washington DC and frequently saw kids trying to steal cars and then running off into the park if anyone tried to catch them. While I still had the car in Brooklyn, I also found the tires slashed (Willoughby and Carleton) and the side mirrors stolen (So. Portland between DeKalb and Lafayette).
The lesson to be learned is, to use the subway or the two feet that you were born with. Or else pay $400 a month to garage the hybrid so your $100 nano doesn’t get stolen.
attempted abduction? i couldnt find anything online…
Settle down, Reggie. No one asked for condescention.
Not to be condescending, but it’s condescension. I’ll chalk it up to hasty typing.
I saw a cop late last night in a bodega and asked him about this attempted abduction. He told me that they hadn’t found the girl, that it could also be a hoax, and that they don’t alert the media, the media just finds out. I have no idea where the case stands now.
Glass all over the street this morning in front of my building (Dekalb between Vanderbilt and Clinton) and also just saw glass all over the street on Vanderbilt at Lafayette.
I must say, its something i’ve only noticed rarely, but seeing glass all over the place twice in one day is pretty extreme.
Break-ins are a common occurrence in these parts. Glass right now by the G train on Lafayette corner of Clinton. My Denali was vandalized multiple times in the past 3 years. My hub caps were stolen after I brought the truck home from the dealership within the first week, corner of Dekalb and Clinton. Side mirror was swiped. And two professional break-ins. No shattered glass here, drilled holes below the door handle, broken steering column, etc. They wanted the car. Last time they took the navigation. Both times the cost to fix the car ran me well over 5k. Last one was 8k. 330 Clinton between Dekalb and Lafayette is the Hot spot. Car broken into twice, in the same space. Thank god for Geico. People watch out for Sunday into Monday as well. Thieves expect you not to return to your vehicle because you are resting for work the next morning. Both times that is when they hit my car. We have a lot of nightlife in the ‘hood. So Saturday they think you may come back to your vehicle during the night.
It’s funny, houses valued well into the millions and we still deal with car break-ins. Word of advice, protect your valuables, get a garage. Thieves are casing Clinton Hill/Ft. Greene for Brooklyn’s easy targets.
Hall St twixt Willoughby and Dekalb. Never park there.
I couldn’t agree more. I walk this block daily and there have been periods over the past two years where I’ll see evidence (pile of broken glass) of multiple break ins.
Corey, you poor thing. You sure it wasn’t eco-terrorists?
My car was broken into last night. It’s a piece of shit 1987 BMW. We park it on the street because we figured no one would mess with it. The thieves went through the glove compartment, but didn’t take anything, not that there as anything in there but an EZ Pass. I was planning on donating it, anyone know a good place?
My car was broken into Sunday night. I was LIVID…I moved to Buckwick: Wilson and Shaefer St. I previiusly lived in Clinton Hill: Bedford Ave btw Myrtle and Willoubhy…never a problem.
I’ve lived in Clinton Hill for 4 years, near Pratt. I see at least 4 cars every morning with smashed windows. Well. today was my turn. There was nothing in the car to steal, they took an old CD and about $1 in change. So sad, these break-ins have got to stop.
Two new studies show why some people are more attractive for members of the opposite sex than others.
The University of Florida, Florida State University found that physically attractive people almost instantly attract the attention of the interlocutor, sobesednitsy with them, literally, it is difficult to make eye. This conclusion was reached by a series of psychological experiments, which were determined by the people who believe in sending the first seconds after the acquaintance. Here, a curious feature: single, unmarried experimental preferred to look at the guys, beauty opposite sex, and family, people most often by representatives of their sex.
The authors believe that this feature developed a behavior as a result of the evolution: a man trying to find a decent pair to acquire offspring. If this is resolved, he wondered potential rivals. Detailed information about this magazine will be published Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
In turn, a joint study of the Rockefeller University, Rockefeller University and Duke University, Duke University in North Carolina revealed that women are perceived differently by men smell. During experiments studied the perception of women one of the ingredients of male pheromone-androstenona smell, which is contained in urine or sweat.
The results were startling: women are part of this repugnant odor, and the other part is very attractive, resembling the smell of vanilla, and the third group have not felt any smell. The authors argue that the reason is that the differences in the receptor responsible for the olfactory system, from different people are different.
It has long been proven that mammals (including human) odor is one way of attracting the attention of representatives of the opposite sex. A detailed article about the journal Nature will publish.
There is ALWAYS fresh piles of glass on Waverly btw Willoughby & DeKalb & I often see cars with broken windows still waiting for their owner to find. I only park there as a last resort. Where are all the cops???
