June has always been a bit of a mystery to me. I’ve eaten there a few times and the food has always been tasty, but it’s never crowded like the other restaurants on DeKalb. It was the same with the restaurant that proceeded it, Sol. I always wonder why it’s never quite taken off.
On Saturday, I noticed this:

Eek!
Two years ago, on my way to the Q train one morning, I passed by June and saw a mouse on the inside of the window sill. Just saying.
Anyone know what’s up?

THAT IS SO GROSS – I USED TO NEXT DOOR TO IT AND WOULD EAT THERE A FEW TIMES. SERVICE ALWAYS SUCKED AND THEY ALWAYS HAD A BUSYBODY BEHIND THE BAR. THE OWNER WAS NICE THO.
I also found June a bit of a mystery. The food was decent, but overpriced. The service was awful. However, I loved the lounge in the back. The mix of furniture was intriguing. As for Sol, I heard it closed down after the fallout from some guy being shot at the bar. Is this true?
June and Sol were the same owners. Sol didn’t work so they tried a facelift and different menu. The food was ok but I think small plate menus with regular plate prices are never a big hit. What FG/CH really needs is an all American diner open 24 hours. That’s my vote.
the board of health is going overboard with closings since the KFC thingy. you’re in nyc….there are mice EVERYWHERE.
Rain, I agree! They’ve been going nuts all over the place. If anywhere could eliminate mice/rats, they would be gone from everywhere. The Bd of health know this, but are reacting to media pressure. Still, I would hope that food service establishments at least clean daily.
June was good for me the 3 times I went there, and they have a cool location and space. I hope they bounce back.
24 diner is definitely what we need!
I thought the food at June was ok but the portioning was strange. The portions didn’t seem full sized but they also seemed too large and slightly too expensive to be considered small plate.
Isn’t this the proof for the owner that he should try another kind of buisness after a few failures ? the location is great and hopefully something else will open there, sorry but I think this is the way that department of sanitation should act period ! give me a break with the usual “this is New York ” bullshit! I want to eat out at a restaurant that is clean, if you don’t serve that much food or you overcharge for it, at least be clean!
June has always been wildly inconsistent at best in terms of the food, and yes, the service is almost always atrocious. The owner is most definitely NOT a restauranteur, and can’t or won’t hire seasoned restaurant people to work the place who might right the ship. Yet the funny thing is, June is probably the most beautiful and comfortable room on all of DeKalb Ave.’s restaurant row. Strange, isn’t it? Maybe not…ask around the neighborhood some, and you’ll find out what I did, that the place is most likely a well-dressed front. Go ahead, ask around…
We were having a drink at the bar when the inspector came. Despite being CH residents for three years, it was our first time there. The person sitting next to us said that the squid tasted terrible and sent it back. “There is no way this is fresh” he told us.
They open last night. Two brave customers were spotted!
I hated the food at June though it is a beautiful space. It never seeemd crowded enough to be able to pay the rent, though. Walked by there tonight and it was definitely open — what’s the deal?
I had one of my worst dining experiences here. Glad they’re gone!
