Reader question:
Everyday I ride my bike through the intersection of Washington and Atlantic and wonder where that wonderful bakery smell is coming from? It can’t be that storage area and I reckon that it’s not the McDonald’s on Vanderbilt — so where’s it coming from? I wonder if you know.
Just curious! It’s been on my mind forever.
I’m banking on the Hasidic bakery on Waverly near Atlantic. It’s right near the brewery. Houseowax and I were going to stop in that day we hit up the brewery, but we were drunk and it was nearing sundown. I don’t think it’s the kind of place you can just pop into to pick up some cupcakes — they probably do baking for kosher restaurants, etc.

i stopped and talked to one of the workers late on a saturday night. he said if we came back after midnight they would give us some bread!!! but we never returned to taste test. He told me that they only sell their stuff in stores but didn’t go into details. love the smell though!
Oh how I long for a walk-in bakery in CH/FG.
i live a block away and smell it every night. my husband has snapped pix of the inside, and it is definitely a commercial bakery – didn’t know it was kosher though.
Thank you for solving the mystery! I always smell it when I get off the train late night at Washington and Fulton. Smells like baking cookies to me. I’ve been trying to figure out where the wonderful smell is coming from.
Hey! My parole officer could be reading this!
It’s Beigel’s Bakery for sure. I used to walk by there with Cameron in the mornings and one time some guys offered me leftover bread and coffee cake. I’ve seen Beigel’s baked goods at Fairway. It’s not fancy stuff, but it’s tasty. You can see their web site at beigelsbakery.com
I was the man on the bike who asked the question — so thank you. I’m going to dip in there on my way home today.
ps. Which brewery is down there?
For the love – thank you so much for solving this mystery! The smells from that place drive me crazy when I’m out jogging…
