I walked past this strange structure on Clinton between Myrtle and Park over the weekend. For some reason, it looks like an old greenhouse to me. What was this, or what was it going to be?

dunno what it is but its been like that forever.
My friend lives in the building next door and heard it was and eventually still is supposed to be a church.
part of the church on the other side, but they never received the correct approvals so – sits in holding pattern since as long as i know – at least 6 years!
Yes, was going to be a church addition but I think money fell through. The church was on NY1 a few months ago because newbie neighbors were complaining about noise during church services.
The complaints about noise are not new. This has been going on for over 15 years. For those that live close to the church, it gets tedious after 4 hours of loud drum sounds reverberating through one’s apartment. The structure went up 3-4 years ago. At the time it was a run down fence that they cut a hole in and passed the beams through. They then used the hole to pass the hose through that filled the foundation with concrete, even managing to cover a parked S.U.V. with the material. It’s an eyesore and for what Time Out NY called the 31st best block in NYC, a complete disappointment – visually and financially.
well the guy featured in the NY1 story was a newbie.
Newbie here,
Will you people PLEASE stop making fun of me???!?
never.
As the owner of the adjacent property for eight years, I know this structure well.
Please find the link with further information in a recent article in the Brooklyn Paper titled :
” City, neighbors hope to quiet ‘noisy’ church” :
http://www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/30/14/30_14noisychurch.html
Regarding the structure itself, the first filing for this was in 1990 and it was dissapproved. After a few more non starters there was a “partial approval” in 1996 for: “AT FIRST FLOOR, REPLACE 4 BOILERS AND 4 HOT WATER HEATERS WITH NEW UNITS AND REPLACE BATHROOM PLUMBING FIXTURES WITH HANDICAP PLUMBING FIXTURES. ADD ONE STORY BUILDING IN THE REAR TO USE AS A CHURCH.”
Unfortunately, these neighbors can not even do the basic up keep on their property, much less build a new structure that is not even propery filed. Also, the Church although owning the property since 1988 has never obtained a “permit to assemble” and have been using the property contrary to it’s Certificate of Occupancy which the Church filed itself in 1988 as “ two apartments, studio and art gallery, and accessory garages.”
Despite exhaustive efforts to address what is a sensitive issue to begin with, the city is now pursuing “ a resolution through criminal courts” according to a Dept. of Building spokesperson.
I am no Newbie
Oh, holy CRAP! I didn’t realize it was THAT church! A few months ago, they had some event and filled the entire block of Waverly with cars. I almost called the cops- it was SO disruptive.
I don’t live close enough to hear them but I’ve walked by and they have a sweet neon purple crucifix inside.
Yes, it IS the same church. In response to numerous complaints, Local Police Precinct 88 (our precinct) issued a Citizen Complaint Form in 2003 stating “church notified that double parking creates a safety hazard and is asked to notify all members to find alternate parking.” That was 4 years ago and we’re still, obviously, having difficulties. Next time do call the police. The 88th is well aware of our situation and will do all they can to help. If there had been an emergency and an ambulance or a fire truck needed to get down our street, it would have been impassable and we would have had an even more “disruptive” situation. This church has had a history of disregard and disrespect for the members of our community for many years. The noise, the unsanitary conditions, the disruption of our lives, etc. need to stop. If you are concerned, you have to contact your representatives. Or you can contact Community Board 2. You can call 311 and file a complaint. This is our home and if all of us make a little effort, we’ll be able to have some peace and quiet.
Get ready neighbors! This illegal church is gearing up for their annual “Harvest Festival”. In order to even have this event, they get a “permit” to close down the street from the corner of Clinton to the front of their structure on Waverly thanks to the powers that be. Of course, they take more space than is permitted, park their loos in front of other buildings withouot asking for permission, start on Friday night to party (even though it’s a Sunday permit) and carry on all weekend until 10-11PM even though the permit ends at 8PM. Yep, they do pretty much what they want without much regard for the community. Where oh where are the authorities when you need them?
