Last week, Brownstoner reported that the folks behind Choice have leased the laundromat on Greene near Grand. In addition to cheeses and fresh produce, they’re also slated to offer FRESH FLOWERS. I’m most excited about the flowers, to be honest. If they’re as pretty as the dessert display at Choice, I’ll be mighty satisfied.
I wonder how pricing will be in the new shop. I think Choice’s pricing is pretty reasonable, given the quality of the food and the portions. Let’s hope the inside setup is more efficient.

Per a neighbor’s tip, the new establishment will also have a charcuterie. Yeah, I had to Google it, too. From Wikipedia:
Charcuterie (from either the French chair cuite, cooked meat, or the French cuiseur de chair, cooker of meat) is the branch of cooking devoted to prepared meat products such as sausage and confit primarily from pork. The practice goes back to ancient times and can involve the chemical preservation of meats; it is also a means of using up various meat scraps. Hams, whether smoked, air-cured, salted, or treated by chemical means, are examples of charcuterie.
The French word for a person who prepares charcuterie is charcutier, and that is generally translated into English as “pork butcher.” This has led to the mistaken belief that charcuterie can only involve pork. Not sure if this is true but I heard in the name of efficiency you will wait in line over at Choice to place your order for the new place. You will then have to walk over to the new place , wait in line to pick up your order and then wait in another line to pay. You will then need to walk back to Choice to receive your change. All the while the staff will be running around like chickens without heads.
Choice Market has some of the best things in the nabe. Not least of which are the doggie station tie up and the dog biscuits. The coffee and cookies are good too.
Ditto to #2, 3 & 5. While their food is good, the slow service and the high prices has kept me away. But when you have a million other folks who patronize this business (of course for it’s “trendiness”) who cares?!
Sounds like a little competition for the wonderful L’Epicerie on Vanderbilt at Dekalb…
More Food! More flowers! In the nabe…hopefully this is a trend which will continue.
i really don’t get this “wonderful” L’Epicerie crap. what is the point of this place? can’t it decide on what it’s point is? i’ve bought a vegetable there a couple of times in a clinch but i never really understood it–a deli to get an insanely overpriced sandwich? a restaurant to have a meal in the evening? a place to get really expensive soup? i wanted to love this place but i can’t. everytime i walk in i feel like someone has pinned a “sucker” sign on my back. come on, doesn’t anyone else feel that way?
I agree that L’Epicerie is a bit West Village for our humble Clinton Hill, but it beats a spin off continuation of Choice. If needed, only one expensive French grocery in the neighborhood is enough. And isn’t there something said for longevity…let’s support the old before succumbing to the new. Isn’t that the flavor of Clinton Hill that we are attracted to?
I agree with you Ellie, I went in there for some of the tempting bread I saw while passing and left without my arm and a leg. Never again.Ridiculous prices.
While we are on the subject, anyone know if that is a restaurant about to open on Grand Avenue, off Greene ave,heading towards gates on the right hand side, green storefront with flowers in front of it?
Hope Choice gets that up and running before the next millenium,slow as they are. What would it take to get a nice, clean smelling supermarket in this neighborhood? I dont mean Pioneer on Lafayette, Associated on Waverly or Myrtle , Met on Fulton or Key Food on Fulton off Franklin because all of these stores for one reason or another have a distinct odor( like cats and litterboxes in them and their cut and quality of meats is horrible aside from being green,spoiled and stink. Pathmark is such a trek. A nice Foodtown with a deli and fresh seafood , fresh flowers and produce would be great where the current Met is located.I have complained to mgmnt at some of these locations about having cats in their stores,against health regulations.Now that I think of it, must be there to keep the rats or mice away. Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
give l’epicerie a break. they’ve got fresh bread and the sandwiches & soup are worth the price. i have dreams about their soup. where else in the neighborhood are you gonna find prosciutto?
choice is slow. the quality of their fancy ingredients ain’t as good as they’d have you believe. but their baked goods are delicious, they also have fresh bread, and the coffee beats tilly’s any time. hopefully they’ll hire enough staff for the new place, and teach ‘em a bit about social niceties before they throw them behind the counter.
in this city, almost every grocery store has a cat. it’s a necessity: roaches and mice are otherwise nearly impossible to keep away. which would you rather have?
I want to like Choice so badly and I’ll undoubtedly patronize their new market, but the glacial pace of the service there is SO off-putting that I’m just this side of refusing to go there. The prices are astronomical- I recently paid $6 for a pint container of what amounted to little more than steamed broccoli! I could live with that if I didn’t have to spend the better part of my day waiting for them to fill my order.
Get it together, Choice – I can’t imagine the neighborhood will lack competition forever!
Tee, I prefer neither. I dont have a cat, roaches , mice or rats, thank God. I do have an exterminator come 2x a month throughout the entire house. I keep on my tenants to empty their garbage and keep dishes out the sink. So far so good. Pathmark doesnt have a cat and the atlantic terminal pathmark is in the heart of fort greene wherethey had a recent rat problem. At least use bleach to sanitize. That smell is unbearable. AS for Lepicerie, to each their own as with choice. I just choose not to patronize some establishments, whether it is because their prices are ridiculous or service is lacking, or the establishment is not up to par as far as cleanliness goes.You can go where you like. I rather do something else with my hard earned dollars then to spend lots of it on overpriced bread soup or produce.
L’Epicerie crap??? I’m not familiar with Choice, but L’Epicerie is the only place around here where I’ve found really, really good meat and vegetables, not to mention pretty good cheeses and while I’m not nuts about the bread, please advise where you can get better around here? You get what you pay for. The only negative I have for L’Epicerie is that it doesn’t have more variety, but then they’d have to have a lot more space. I think they do what they do very well.
Wow! I can’t believe the Choice Market haters. If you don’t like the wait then don’t wait. No one’s putting a gun to your head and forcing you spend “the better part of your day witing for them to fill your order”.
As for the staff knowing “social niceties”? I have yet to receive rude service from any of the staff at Choice. The again I say “please” when I order and I say “thank you” after I receive what I’ve asked for. Perhaps you’re simple getting back what you’re giving them.
Jeff: I didn’t call L’Epicerie crap. Please don’t take my words out of their obvious context. I said that calling it “wonderful” was crap, and I still think it is. I agree that it’s the only place around for certain things–as I said in my original posting. But I’m not going to rave about how good it is just because there’s nothing better around. I’ll go there if I’m stuck for something but that doesn’t make it good and it certainly doesn’t make it afforable. I only shop there if there’s something I forgot to add to my Fresh Direct order. And I don’t think FD is perfect either but their cheese and organic vegetables is just as good and I don’t have to spend all day shopping for a single meal. Come on, L’Epicerie is good in the sense that one can point it out to guests and relatives as evidence of living in a “civilized” neightborhood.
Lemonhead – Apologies. I need to read with a bit more care. I saw ‘L’Epicerie’ and I saw ‘crap’ and I erroneously conflated the two. One last note – their chickens are really, really good. I don’t think my roasting skills have gotten any better, but my chickens from L’Epicerie has been the best I’ve made.
Jeff: I’ve never bought chicken or meat there, but am willing to give it a try!
i just hope the new place from the choice folks has a better selection than l’epicerie. i buy items there occasionally, but their selection is sparse and random.
