as suspected here, and confirmed here, a new italian eatery is coming soon to myrtle between washington and waverly. i was passing by today and saw an open door, so i stopped in, chatted with one of the owners, frank, and the manager, andrew, and got some pre-opening photos.
as lesterhead mentioned in her earlier post, the place is looking gorgeous:

the wine rack and all of the shelving are made from wood from orginal beams that they took from the ceiling, as is the top of the bar. there’s also an outdoor space that looks like it will be lovely:

it will be called il torchio, in honor of this:

which is, of course, a torchio, or old-fashioned hand pasta press.
but most exciting, to me anyway, is the concept for the place: italian wine bar and tapas restaurant. they will have bottles from all regions of italy, and instead of the traditional appetizer/pasta/main course menu, will serve tapas-style small plates.
frank owns this building and the two next to it—his business up until this point has been construction, this will be his first food & wine venture.
they hope to be open in the next few weeks, once all of their licenses have come through from the city. so keep your eyes open….

Hey Mama, good looking out! I don’t usually get excited about the restaurant openings around here but I’m really looking forward to this one! I love wine bars and the whole concept, plus the place looks like it’s going to be beautiful. Cheers!
Great to have another Italian place in the hood. Hopefully they are able to pull off a small plate menu better than June on Dekalb.
June has a small plate menu? The last time I ate there it was a regular menu but we were less than enthused so we haven’t been back…
Has anyone tried the reincarnation of veliis on Fulton? I forget the new name…
Rich, actually I’m not sure. Originally it advertised a small plate menu but the dishes seemed a large and maybe a little pricey to order more than one. We were also less than enthused by the food but hoped it would improved because the space is really cool.
very exciting, although the food dream i have most is having a place in the hood to get a delicious pasta to go…
Rich, the new place in the old Veliis is called Epoca. I’ve been twice with my wife and enjoyed it immensely. As with many places when they first open, get there now while the owner still works there!
nice, this is great news! maybe they’ll put a bocce court in the back space.
Great news. Tired of the trek to Lavilla in park slope even though it is well worth it.
Still wish there was somewhere a nice bakery with fresh baked bread, rolls and pastries opens up. I have the perfect spot. Corner of Gates and Downing across from the video shop, down the block from me.Anyone listening?
totally agree! bread and some nice cakes for birthdays, etc. i’d think this neighborhood could support such a spot. but i’m also really hoping this italian place will be great. locanda is good but another good italian would be most welcome!
Il Torchio restaurant looks like it will be a good one. However, in Italy a “torchio” is used to crush grapes – not make pasta!
the torchio actually presses the crushed grapes to make wine must – to be exact.
hi rosemary –
maybe “torchio” has two meanings…. i looked it up on line after the owners showed me the torchio they have, and found a couple of places listing pasta-making torchios, like this one.
Grapes ? I thought they just used their feet…like in the I Love Lucy episode. :=) TORCHIO just means press.
