A reader just sent me this interesting tip:
as i was walking home last night, while crossing st. james at fulton, i picked up a flyer for a new cafe supposedly opening sometime next week.
here’s the info:
‘frank white’ – cafe/gallery/social
936 atlantic avenue @ st. james pl
- gourmet coffee
- tasty treats
- international news
- gallery space
- social lounge
‘frank white utilizes fair trade, organic, green, & natural products whenever possible’
their website url is www.frankwhitenyc.com, but it doesn’t appear to be up yet.
This is what I call a pioneer – opening on Atlantic! Must check it out.

I live near here and have noticed them working on the space. While I think they’re nuts for opening a coffee shop where there’s no foot traffic, I must say they’ve done an incredible job with the space. It looks super cool. Check it out.
YES!
I’ll patronize any establishment named after the king of new york. good find, thanks.
maybe there would be foot traffic if there was a destination to go to.
yay for pioneering on Atlantic!
Interesting. I wish them luck and will check it out once open.
I think I’ve seen the place, has a nice outward appearance, at least from what I saw standing on St. James between Fulton and Atlantic. The front is glass paned windows, with the framing painted green.
Hey, I never would have thought that Atlantic Avenue from Hoyt Street going east would have developed as quickly and nicely as it did. Maybe in the long term, this part of Atlantic can do the same…
Not in Clinton Hill, but…
I noticed that there appears to be a new place opening on DeKalb in Ft. Greene in the space formerly occupied by Mo-Bay. A sign that says something like “Caffe y Vino” is up on the door.
I hope they are being ironic with the name.
I don’t get it? What’s ironic about Frank White? Who’s Frank White?

Biggie said that he was “the black Frank White”
Ah- now I get it. I guess it’s been a long time since I saw KONY.
We passed by the other day and pressed our faces to the glass, excited about a potential low key- cafe. The owner came out and was really friendly saying to stop back soon. Definitely will check it out.
I live at 936 Atlantic and have been watching the construction downstairs. Frank White looks BEAUTIFUL! Black and white wallpaper, chandeliers, very Alice in Wonderland looking. I hope people find it. There is nothing on this stretch of Atlantic except for car washes and sketchy “electrical equipment” shops. The owner is very sweet. She had an open house over Labor Day weekend and I don’t think many people showed up. I really hope this does well.
On that part of Atlantic?! Are they crazy? There is NOOOOOOO foot traffic at all and the traffic whizzes by so fast on Atlantic, you barely notice the place! But hey, I live near there and I’ll support it when I can.
[...] Frank White Photos September 11th, 2007 by lesterhead A friend and CHB reader was kind enough to snap some shots of Frank White outside and through the window on Atlantic last week: [...]
i heard they are opening up tomorrow, thursday 9/14. they have a garden too!
hours are 7-3.
i plan to stop by in morning to check it out.
i wish people would find another word to use to describe such things in place of “pioneer.” i find it really offensive.
Last week my friends had a party at that new cafe’ Frank White on Atlantic Ave. OMG, it was the cutest place I had ever seen! Its a cafe’ during the day and they rent it out for events at night. I talked to the manager that very night and booked it for my hubby’s bday party next month! It was a steal! Def a must see!
