I dined at Tamboril last Friday! I’m waiting for BrooklynJay to go and write up his traditional review, but I’ll share some preliminary thoughts.

First, the space looks great. Warm colors, nice furniture and a cool use of what could have been an awkward space. The wait staff was exceptionally friendly and prompt as well. I had a special coconut shrimp appetizer special with a fried chicken dish, plus shared the bread pudding for dessert. Everything was really flavorful, and the place got pretty full later in the evening. They’ll start serving brunch this weekend- yay!
Now, here are my gripes, which seem to apply to ALL new restaurants in the ‘hood. Tamboril does not have its liquor license yet, nor are they accepting credit cards. I assume both of these conditions will change in the next few weeks, but it’s still a major inconvenience to the customer! The plus side to the BYOB is that is makes dinner exponentially cheaper, and Tamboril isn’t charging any corking fee (ahem). However, the credit card thing really pisses me off. This likely means you must depart the restaurant for an ATM and then deal with getting change and splitting up small bills between friends later in the evening. I just don’t understand why these places can’t wait another week or so to open until they have that stuff in place. I’ve definitely walked away from a place I was about to dine at when learning they didn’t take cards. Yes, accepting credit cards is an expense for businesses, but when you have a huge space to fill with customers, it’s necessary. Dear restaurants yet to open: get your ducks in a row, and then open!

I understand your criticism but I guess from an owner’s perspective they are paying for the space and therefore losing money if they remain closed while waiting for a credit card machine. In other news we ate lunch at Il Torchio yesterday and they are now serving liquor. The food and service were decent but there were only a few customers at the time.
Perhaps you should have stopped by at the liquor store on your way back from the ATM. As long as a place lets me know that they aren’t accepting credit cards it is no big deal to me – and I am not sure how credit cards make it easier to split the tab with friends. But I am glad there is naother nice spot in the hood. Still waiting over hearing in the Southeast corner. ..
they’ve been plastering windshields with flyers, which means i will avoid them. that drives me crazy.
It all looks and sounds “nice” but in a location where there already are Spanish resteraunts it is a bit expensive. $ 6.00 for the appetiser Empanaditas Or the $ 9.00 burger !
Same thing happened to me when my former neighbors opened Locanda Ollie n Vini on Cambridge Pl. Good thing I just had to cross the street to get home and grab the cash. Must be the norm cause when I ate at that french restaurant that closed on Fulton off Greene and was replaced by Epoca, the same thing, no credit cards and byob. I ran next door to the green grape and grabbed a bottle of wine and luckily there was an atm across the street.those 2 experiences now make me ask ahead of time.anyway will check out the food for myself.
Thank you for your honest comment. We are now accepting credit cards. Next time you would like to have our “special coconut shrimp” you won’t need cash or credit cards cause it will be on us. Just ask for Ed. Please join us on Tuesday night for live jazz.
I am so glad that CHB exists to keep me up to date on my nabe news, and I do my best to support and learn about local businesses as well. I stumbled across Tamboril a few weeks ago and brought a date there the other night. Ed is a wonderful host, the place is beautiful and the food is great. I love a good BYOB and I’ve lived in NYC long enough to understand there’s a lot of “cash only” in this city. Suggesting that a restaurant withhold a week’s worth of business while paying for real estate on Myrtle because a credit card company needs to get their act together is a bit harsh though. It’s a pet peeve you have, and not a huge character flaw for a new business to have. There are bumps in the road, not boulders. I’ll be going there again soon, and you’re gonna love this part: paying with plastic.
