A few of you have mentioned this in the comments, and I haven’t yet stopped by. BUT, they’re hosting a FREE wine tasting tonight!
Please join Gnarly Vines for the first of many free winemaker tasting events: Wednesday, October 3rd from 6-8pm at Gnarly Vines, 350 Myrtle Avenue (between Carlton and Adelphi). Chrystal Clifton of Brewer-Clifton and Palmina Wineries will be pouring the following spectacular, handcrafted, small-production wines made by her, her husband Steve and their partner Greg Brewer:
2006 Palmina Malvasia Bianca, Larner Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley (187 cases produced)
2005 Palmina Dolcetto, Santa Barbara County
2005 Brewer-Clifton, Cargasacchi Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills (576 cases produced)
2005 Melville, Estate-Verna’s Syrah, Santa Barbara County (2864 cases produced)
Their grand opening party is slated for November, and they hope to have several events lined up, including wine-food pairings with local restaurants. Welcome!

Go while you can. This neighborhood is not ready for this, and the selection is new-world heavy Parkerized garbage.
I’m of a generation where ‘New World’ (including Spain, Portugal, etc.) is still much more appealing and accessible than Italy’s and France’s nonsense appellation nomenclature. (‘What the hell is a Valpolicella? Uh, I’ll just have this Chianti here.) Please, spare everyone the metathematic wine-snobbery.
However much Parker skews and corrodes the wine-drinking landscape, at least he helped contribute to more people actually drinking wine. That’s more than can be said for anyone commenting on this blog.
Whatever downsides to that may have been, more has been helped than harmed.
Well, i think the neighborhood is ready. Went in hoping they’d have more affordable bottles than the wine shop on deKalb and they do. Lots of bottles under $10. Salesman recommended two based on our preferences and both were excellent. We’ll return and if others have our same experience, should stay in biz. Also sounds like they will have a web presence where you can track the bottles you buy (handy for those of us who never remember labels…)
Never mind what the wine snob says. This place is great for the ‘hood. We’ve been there twice, and both times the salesmen were very friendly and helpful, and picked out wines for us based on our taste and budget. Lots of wine under $10, and what we’ve tried so far is good!
