I’ve always loved these.
Most of them are empty, the others are filled with faculty and a few students like myself. Pratt has some sort of master plan eventually evicting all the people living there, and of course no one knows when or why. Lots of rumors about tearing them down. Anyone know how we can stop them from doing this?
To get the city to stop tearing down historical buildings in the neighborhood one must petition or (more appropriately) apply to landmark the block. I think there is a segment of the Clinton Hill Society which can help with this.
Anything Pratt doesnt own in this area.Sheesh.
They are gorgeous and it would be a real shame if they were knocked down. It would be much better if they were renovated.
They should, without a doubt, undergo SERIOUS renovation if they are to be preserved as landmarks. Having lived in one of those buildings for almost two years, I can say in all honesty that they should be condemned. They’re really, really run-down, and in need of serious TLC.
The news thus far is that Pratt has plans to turn them into “luxury suites” for graduate students, the runt running about 2,000 a month PER PERSON. Ridiculous. In their current state, 300/month would be way too expensive.
I lived in one of these on Emerson as a child and teenager in the 60′s and 70′s. They were run-down then AND dangerous. I hear the neighborhood has improved but I still have nightmares.
I used to live at 222 Willoughby Avenue in the early 80′s. We lived there until I was about 6. My father was the Associate Provost at Pratt and the HEOP director. I remember the house well. It was a beautiful house with hardwood floors and an attic!
I almost cried when I searched the house on Google Maps. I cannot believe what has happened to the entire block .
