I admit, it’s taken me awhile to get over to Gnarly Vines. But man, is it NICE in there! The space is enormous — much bigger than I anticipated — but is long and narrow, giving the store a cozy feel.
Store owner Brian was ultra-friendly and recommended some great bottles for me.

Check out their Grand Opening party this Thursday from 6-10pm!

i really like this place. we got a $6 bottle of wine that was good!
We have yet to get over there, generally going to Thirst when we need a quick wine fix. We’re going to try our best to go tonight and check the place out.
Ah,,,you always provide more feedback and photos for certain establishments ,especially those in Ft Greene.Unlike Speakeasy,I see you remembered to take your camera.
bianca, that’s a silly post. How about the fact that she went to Speakeasy on the very first night it opened and wrote about it the next day whereas Gnarly Vines has been open for over a month and she’s only just gotten over there herself? Come on, give her a break. And she acknowledged that after a stressful day, she forgot her camera when going to Speakeasy’s opening night.
I love this place. It’s right around the corner from my house which is a bonus, but also they have a great selection of affordable wines. I like thirst too, but it’s easier to find a cheaper wine at gnarly wines, I find, and they are always good. Plus their computer can keep track of things you’ve bought so you can remember the names if you like something.
This is the real Bianca and somebody has just used my name for the 12:52 post… How can one prevent this??? I hate IT! Whoever the coward is, use your name, will you please?
Thanks!
Excuse me….my name happens to be Bianca as well and I posted the earlier comment.Get over yourself.
Thats funny.
also, biancas numbers one and two have a points: ft. greene really is a far better neighborhood than clinton hill so who could blame lesterhead for spending more of her time here. i mean clinton hill? so 1994.
I can’t believe someone has the gall to criticize lesterheads blog. It’s her blog, she put up whatever the hell she wants. If she wants to take photos all day long of the clouds than that’s her perogitive. This blog is a great service for someone who lives in the neighborhood and wants to know whats going on when they come home from work. Get a grip, or create your own blog!
boo-yah!
I can’t get into thirst. . . I don’t like they hide the prices. I don’t want to search for the price and feel like I’m some cheapskate. I’m in merchandise so I know about these things
Girls, girls–you’re both pretty. That goes for Thirst and Gnarly Vines, which are plenty far-enough apart to each have a healthy biz. And for Clinton Hill and Ft. Greene, which obviously are tiny, interdependent, and inseparable. And which both rock. It’s just great to see Myrtle begin catching up to the quality on Dekalb. Went to Thirst a couple nights ago and Brian turned us on to a great mid-priced Sonoma coast pinot noir. I think he knows his stuff, and I think he’s gonna do great. Congrats.
Whoa–I mean I went to Gnarly Vines and Brian picked a great wine for us. I’m still imbibing it, evidently…
yeah, I agree, there’s plenty of room for both Gnarly Vines and Thirst in the neighborhood. Have yet to get over to either one, but it’s obvious from all I’ve read about both that they’re both small, independent shops with owners that care a great deal about selecting their wines. I’m sure both have their strengths and both most likely avoid the huge mass producers you can get at any package store.
I, for one, think it’s GREAT that there’s TWO places within a 5-10 minute walk of my front door/both on the way from the train where I can take a quick, spur of the moment walk to pick up a great bottle, spend my money in the neighborhood and avoid having to trek to Manhattan to get something nice for dinner.
The sign that just went up for Gnarly Vines sure helps…I looked for it three or four times before I finally saw exactly where it was. The scaffolding a few doors down and the low lighting made it hard to pick out at first until I knew it was there. Almost went in on the way home Sunday because it looked so inviting, but I was in sweats and a hoodie with my Knicks hat on, so I decided to wait for a better time. Very soon, though.
Thanks to both for opening up! Salute!
The post says “CSA members” get 10% off. Maybe it’s a dumb question, but what is the “CSA”?
CSA = community supported agriculture http://www.clintonhillcsa.org/
This neighborhood can absolutely support two (or more) great wine shops like Thirst and GV. At least I hope so
We didn’t join CSA this year but we’re defintiely going to next year.
JD….surprise you can make a comment other than mentioning that Jakes delivers to Clinton Hill. I will state my opinions as I feel. Boo yah…right back at ya ahole.
I love both Gnarly Vines and Thirst. GV has lots of cheap bottles, and Thirst has a top-notch organic selection. Both wine stores are extremely dog friendly, as is Olivino on Fulton. All are better than the bulletproof liquor stores you used to have to buy wine from in the nabe.
“I will state my opinions as I feel.”
Bianca, has it occurred to you that JD was doing precisely the same thing?

Amen to that! Our closest store is still one of these, and we’ll go in for a bottle of Yellowtail or something if we don’t feel like walking and desperately need something.
JD: i completely agree with your comments about Thirst and pricing! i feel like a cheapskate also peering in at the tiny prices. and i find it annoying that, unlike many wine stores, there’s no section that has modestly priced wines with clear pricing. i never go to thirst anymore; i stick to olivino because the vibe is much more laid back and it’s near the subway. but i do plan to try gnarly now too.
And what about Greene Grape. That’s also where it’s at…
Bianca – get with the program. Jake’s is soooo 4 months ago. Smoke Joint is better. However, I do think that there is something to be said that you remember what an anonymous person (to you) says on a blog almost 5 months ago. Heck, I don’t even know what I say 5 days ago on this. I don’t think you need to resort to personal attacks (ahole? really?) or criticizing how lesterhead manages her blog. Its her blog.
Also, can you give me a rundown of all the grey’s anatomy/friends/gossip girl episodes I’ve been missing. Something tells me YOU DON”T EVER MISS ONE!!!
Bring it, bitch!

how long does the promotion last? i’n thinking about picking up some cases for our next event.
The promotion lasts until the 30th, I believe.
I had fun tonight, but I showed up after 9 and didn’t get to taste a whole lot
Very nice place thought and I’ll definitely be back.
Couldn’t agree more with the comments about hard-to-find prices at Thirst. I once got irritated enough to complain, and they pointed out exactly where the prices were listed, but they were still inconvenient and too small to read easily. (That’s three of us mentioning the problem here–let’s hope the owners read this blog.) I use Greene Grape on Fulton almost exclusively now–they’re friendly and–most important– unpretentious.
I also love that greene grape gives little informational blurbs about each wine which comes in handy for those who want to know more than wine but feel silly asking what viognier goes good with or turning the bottle over like on the sly to make sure your not picking up a $200 house warming present
Ok, so that I differentiate myself from Bianca Number On I am now BiancaMaria …… Can we have a party of the Biancas now? Any others out there? I will buy my wine at Olivino though!!!!! As in “Support that desperate stretch of Fulton”. Rumors had it that she was gong to open a small wine bar nearby, has anybody else heard anything about this?
i heard that about olivino too. i thought it was going to be right next door to their shop but haven’t seen any evidence of it.
i like greene grape too but it’s a bit farther away for me. but i agree it’s pleasant and unpretentious, unlike thirst.
