Did anyone stand in line for a Jive Turkey last week? I was tempted to order the Jive / Greene Grape dinner and wine deal, but you could only get a dinner for a large amount of people (and I was only hosting 4). When I called to simply order a turkey, they told me I had to wait on line for one. This explains the long lines there every year on Thanksgiving.
I’m kind of bummed that I wasn’t able to try one. Anyone have a fried turkey?

We fried our own. Awesome! It was sort of cold for doing it, but no big deal.
But it did use 5 gallons of oil.
A buddy told me he got a Jive Turkey with instructions to warm it for a half-hour. He did so but the bird was still pink inside. He had to cook it for another hour-and-a-half. I told him about the pre-cooked turkey my sister-in-law got from Whole Foods and boy, was he jealous.
I had one – but it was a bit small – pounds or so, so we didn’t have any leftovers at all. The flavor was good, but I agree it required more re-heating time than they suggested.
Ohhhh I had a turkey from Jive for Thanksgiving alright. Boo. Big boo. We ordered it in advance and it was a series of unpleasantries. Turkey was good. Service not so good. I won’t be back. I chronicled the experience here and here.
I don’t think my comment posted… sorry if this goes through twice. We actually had a turkey from Jive. Great turkey. Poor service. Read about it at the two links below…

well, that sounds pretty messed-up, and downright unsafe food-wise. I’m a chef myself, and no one should be selling turkeys to customers with instructions to “re-heat” that are still pink. Those birds just plain are NOT cooked through, and bacteria is still festering under refrigeration. Sounds to me like they are doing more than they can handle volume-wise for the holidays, and not checking each bird with a meat thermometer before packaging them for sale and distribution. I’d be wary of anything like that I purchased, took home, re-heated and found still pink. Beware! And YUK!
From my 4 years of experience with Jive Turkey, it tastes like airline food. Seriously its bad… and that aint no jive.
And pink inside….hmm that is VERY unsafe with poultry
Its really amazing the many negative comments that are so easy to voice by folks who obviously have no idea what it takes to make a store like Jive Turkey the success that it has become. Erika has a line around the block every Thanksgiving (so people OBVIOUSLY see value in her service). Jive Turkey is one of the pioneering efforts on Myrtle Ave that has strongly contributed to its turnaround – and I commend her efforts.
