Vigilance Recommended!

Received this note from a reader, reminding us all to remain aware of neighborhood crime:

I live in an apartment on Lefferts Place near Grand. I wanted to let you and your readers know about an incident that took place in our building on Friday night/early Saturday morning.

I left my apartment at 7:30 am on Saturday morning and found a puddle of urine and a used condom on the landing outside my door. There was some sort of drug baggie, cigarette butts, and a coffee cup on the stairs on other floors. The front door and gate were wide open when I left in the morning. I’ve only lived in the building for a year but there haven’t been any incidents like this so it was obviously quite disturbing. Although I’ve been aware that there is a certain amount of drug activity, etc. in the neighborhood, I’ve felt safe living here and was really shocked by how bold this was. I was home sleeping at the time and it was pretty scary to think that this happened while a building full of people were sleeping.

I guess I just wanted to let some fellow Clinton Hill residents know as a reminder to be extra vigilant of security issues. I wouldn’t want anyone else to encounter to a similar situation or worse if it can be avoided. It certainly was a wake up call for me.

Thanks for reporting this. Are you renting in a brownstone. Just asking since I do not see too many buidlings on that block with gates in front of them. I just moved in the area and appreciate the information.

  2. Off Grand on Lexington and also on Quincy is used condoms central. I guess its spreading. Welcome to hooker alley.

someone’s gonna say it eventually, so it might as well be me: you’re in new york city baby! drug baggies and urine are what you’re paying the high rent for!

Freaky! I moved here from the city about a year ago, and so far so good. There was a persistent homeless person (beggar) on Waverly between Lafayette and Greene near the supermarket for a few months. That really irked me, but it seems like she’s gone now.

lets come out to the 88th Pct Council meeting on the 3rd Tuesady of the month & speak your mind.

  6. Please, please, please tell us that your comment is facetious, kelan7. A perisistent homeless beggar woman? Egad! The nerve! I guess she finally decided to pull herself up by her bootstraps and become a productive member of society.

    Ugh.

Welcome to my life! You are lucky this only happened once–in my building this is an everyday occurrence! I live in the central hub of drug activity, and my bldg is where all the dealers from all over the city get *their* drugs. Needless to say I am CONSTANTLY stepping over urine puddles, drug baggies, condoms, etc, not to mention walking through groups of random strangers in the entryway smoking pot, etc. I even had to call 911 because our resident homeless person who lives on the 3rd stair landing was having a drug seizure. Welcome to life in NYC.

  9. you live in brooklyn, get over it or move back to the yuppies.

All of these issues will likely change in the near future. High-rises, new stadium and a subsequent street-sweep are a comin’.

  11. Hmm, interesting comments. Thanks for the info. Yes, this time of year always has more muggings. You know all those Xmas gifts & $$ for gifts. So keep an eye open leaving the subyay.
kelan7, I beleve that homeless woman, has been around for years ! Her sister lives in a brownstone in the hood. She has been harmless.
misohungry, What building do you live in ?
chicken little, These things never change, they just go underground. Evin quiet suberbia has it’s freaks.

Just use common sense. Happy Holidays to all.

  12. Sorry for the mis spellings…even suburbia.

  13. Wow, these comments make Brooklyn sound like a terribly disgusting place.

I haven’t had any experiences like these, and have lived in Clinton Hill since 1999.

It sounds like it just depends on what building you call home.

    Welcome to New York.

  15. gross but not scary. it could have been a 20 year old who had a wild night. god you people sound like giant babies. OH MY GOD DRUG BAGGIE SO SCARY. HOMELESS PEOPLE. CRAZY get a grip people. or get some balls, pick one. where the hell did most of you move from nebraska?!

  16. My fiance got punched in the face and got his glasses taken from him (?) 2 weeks ago while leaving the G @ clinton/wash (going north on Wash) in broad daylight. I think it was @ 3:00 p.m.

I myslef, coming home from work Friday night got told from some guy standing at the top of the stairway that he “doesn’t give a fuck who I think I was and that he doesn’t give a fuck who I am” Nice way to cap off a Monday. Merry Christmas.

Also, last night, I looked behind me (after all this, can you blame me?) since I heard someone walking up fast and the guy told me to “not be scared” to which I said “I’m not – are you?”

Seriously people, going to work sucks enough. To have to deal with crackheads and thieves on your way home is pathetic.

  17. Melanie Flood, you’re right on. I read the comments on this and other posts and I don’t recognize the neighborhood I’ve lived in for 7+ years. I sometimes work in Hunts Point in the Bronx, and these comments make this area sound worse than the South Bronx.

Am I just blind? According to “gross” above, one block away from my home is “hooker alley.” Really? I walk home that way all the time and can’t recall seeing used condoms and drug paraphenalia strewn about, or any streetwalkers.

I know s#!t happens, and I’ve witnessed a few crimes occur (once being the victim myself) over the course of the years, but these reactions to every little incident seem hysterical to me.

Ok, in all honesty, it’s not like these things are totally crazy and unheard of for ANY neighborhood in New York.
I’m not saying that they don’t suck. Of course they do! But, my boyfriend got assaulted on Avenue C in the village by some asshole who hit him in the ribs with a skateboard and called him a fag for having long hair. Oh my god, the East Village. I mean, wherever you are, in any urban setting, ANYWHERE, yeah you gotta watch your back. Bad shit might happen. There are crazy assholes and crazy drugs addicts WHEREVER you live. I grew up in the country, and yeah we still had crackheads there, believe it or not. They were just easier to avoid, I guess.
Maybe just pray that your housemates aren’t retarded and remember to lock the front door. I mean, it’s a city. As neighborhoody and friendly as it may seem in daylight, it’s a friggin city, man!
