Speakeasy is now doing brunch Saturdays and Sundays. Personally, I’m psyched. It’s right down the street from me, and they’re just in time for the winter weather. I fully expect to slither over most weekends for some coffee and french toast in sweats and a scarf!

So far, I’ve been twice. On my first jaunt, I tried the Ackee & Salt Fish. It was really tasty and unique, and service was friendly. Yesterday, though, I had the omlette. It was very good, but the service was atrocious. The waiter wouldn’t give me a mimosa as part of the brunch deal (and the omlette is marked as such), and then charged me extra for a coffee (I had tea, but the menu clearly states you get coffee/tea AND a booze drink). Let’s hope that guy was just a blip on the radar.
As I’ve said about the dinner menu, I kind of think everything should be $2-$3 cheaper. But it’s still tasty overall, and nice to have nearby.
(Speakeasy is located at the corner of Waverly and Greene.)

God, that place is terrible. I’ve been there 4 times now and it has gotten worst each time. I really think they buy their food at Costco or something. I had the worst caesar salad ever. The dressing was canned and chicken was diced from supermarket frozen aisle. Forget the ice cream, that was way up there with in the 2 for $5 special counter. I give this place another 6 month at best, unless they get their shit together soon. Please, get a real chef and buy real food… I beg you
I feel you. I recently had a “ribeye” that was 3/4s of an inch thick and tasteless. And I am pretty certain that their french fries are frozen.
anyone know what kind of cuisine that new restaurant on Fulton St and Grand Ave are going to serve and when they will open?
this place is EXTREMELY mediocre. i was initially encouraged by a visit during their first week open, but on subsequent visits, the service was absolutely horrible and the food–especially for the price–left a lot to be desired. i was actually served burnt, as in BLACK, toast at brunch! i had high hopes for this place, but they need to train their wait staff in the basics of good service and maybe more than one person needs to take a look at the food on the plate to decide if it’s something they’d like to be served for $12-18!
i actually dined there 5x plus 2x I had drinks…. and i gave up. they are not going to get their act together and I dont think that they even care. I talked to the host Mounir many times and he just shrugged his shoulders. Somehow they seem to believe that they are doing a great job. Check out their website and read on their bios. http://thespeakeasybrooklyn.com/index2.html
I went once, and am hesitant to go back. My ribs were over done. Dry and stringy. My freinds chicken was cold, My other friend had an allergic reaction to something he had. Overall, not so good. The server was nice though.
There’s nothing worst than people opening a restaurant when they have zero experience and no understanding of what good food taste like… money is not enough! Having a dream isn’t enough! You have to be willing to accept the fact that you don’t know anything about this business. Great service, good food, knowledge are key. But still, even with great skills, people fail in this business…
I was so hoping this restaurant would be good. It looks so nice, especially considering the dreadful bodega that use to occupy the space. Unfortunately, it is terrible and horribly overpriced. Perhaps it will fail and another, more experienced restaurateur will swoop in and make it grand.
I ate there the first week or so it was open and it was good. Not fantastic, but good, though yes, a bit pricey for my tastes. Certainly not as horrible as has been described here. Has it really gotten so lousy in such a short span of time?
I ate there once and am not interested in going back either. I had the veggie burger only because they ran out of salmon. They were completley unorganized and understaffed. I ordered the wasabi mashed potatos (yes a little 90′s) but got served french fries instead. i tried one before i sent it back and they were cold and not fresh. The mashed potatos were cold cold cold. the deserts as well seemed extremely manufactured as well. The veggie burger had a huge bun, a drop of ketchipy-mayo, and no onions as listed on the menu…i decided not compplain due to the rest of the frustrations with my other dinning companions and their meals. If you want a veggie burger….go to 5 spot and wait for 45 minutes.
I enjoyed this site very much and have taken away a better insight. I will recommend this site to everyone I know. More people should step into .
