Oh boy, people. We’re on the cusp of an insane explosion…of chi chi grocers!
So far, we have:
- Fresh Garden (Fulton and Lafayette – TriLaFu!) — They have a nice flower selection, thank GOD:
- L’Epicerie (Vanderbilt south of DeKalb): Allegedly cranky service, but also allegedly offering amazing dinners now
- Karrots (Myrtle at Clinton): A little too crunchy for my personal taste
Soon, we’ll have:
- Provisions, a gourmet grocery from the fine folks at the Greene Grape (Fulton at St. Portland):
- Union Market, at the corner of Fulton and Rockwell [BK Paper]
- Choice Market’s new place on Greene near Grand:
- AND… (drumroll)…GREEN PLANET, to open at 969 Fulton (between Washington and St. James). All I know is that it’ll sell “organic food, health food and juices.”
Do you think they’ll be successful?
And finally, just a shout-out to the slightly dank but decently-stocked Associated on Waverly between Lafayette and Greene, which has been increasing their inventory of organic foods and “green” cleaning supplies. Plus, the staff is so friendly!

I’m still holding out for what this neighborhood REALLY — a proper butcher! I love the folks at the Associated. They do it with a smile every time.
Oops, meant to say “REALLY needs”
You should have spelled crunchy with a K, as in: Karrots — a little too krunchy for my taste.
Next time. Excited for Green Planet!
Karrots would do more business if they kept up their stock better.
the folks at the associated are what make nyc great.
two more shout-outs: the associated on myrtle @ hall and the c-town on dekalb @ taaffe—both carrying more organic foods and green stuff every day, and both friendly.
So that’s what’s going on there. Great news. Going to the Met skeeves me out. And they’re overpriced.
Wait, ummm did someone mention Associated on Myrtle? Really? All I get from there is stuff close to expiration and spoiled stuff which I don’t return because I am too lazy. Will definitely try the other Associated since we are starving for a better market. (though definitely not starving)
Thanks guys!
We also love the people at Associated. Shout out to Donna!
Anyone have a good local spot where can you find organic meat? I haven’t had any luck so far with that, but the Associated on Waverly is pretty good for most dry goods, plus the nicest grocery I’ve been to as far as friendliness.
Wow green planet will be amazing. I live right around the corner and I’m sick of walking to Fresh Garden. I’m also not sure how I feel about the Greene Grape people opening a store less than a block from Fresh Garden right after they opened. I think their track record of questionable business practices has been pretty well documented here. I just hope the competition will keep the prices low.
screw greene grape and their new business bunch of ….. excited about green planet, it looks like this part of fulton will be the new place to be, even the charter school opening on waverly! WOW!!!!
The C-Town on Dekalb is our closest mart, and it’s pretty good save for not having very good produce and being too expensive. The deli counter is good, and they’re definitely trying hard.
Count me among those who’d love to see a really good butcher in the neighborhood.
Wait, what is the new Choice Market place going to be? Is it a whole new restaurant or an expansion?
What is the problem with Greene Grape? I’ve been there a few times, but what are their bad business practices?
just assholes that had opposed to the opening of new wine shops near by and such of attitude……….
I wish there was a good quality large grocery store that had everything from organic meats, to nice fresh veggies. I think I’ll still be going to Manhattan to the whole foods for now, with supplements from the farmers mkt and fresh direct.
What is the new Choice Market?
Those seeking a butcher should hit the Fort Green Park Farmer’s Market — I got some delicious steaks there this weekend.
Fresh Market is nice, but I’m excited about Green Planet. They should get plenty of post-commute visits from me.
That’s awesome news about Green Planet. The Met on Fulton is currently my closest mart, and the employees there are the polar opposite of the friendly Associated peeps on Waverly (I’m usually too lazy to walk the extra blocks to go there).
Just a correction. Choice Market is located at Lafayette and Grand.
My only issue with this business is that I lose my appetite when I have to navigate the dog doo doo in front of the entrance…….please, owners, do something about this, it’s quite disgusting. Patrons need to curb their dogs and PICK UP!
Ah, flowers in the new chi chi grocery stores, shipped from South America using lots of fossil fuels, grown under in terrible conditions using chemicals and fungicides that are causing cancer and disease in the workers who handle them all day down there, depleting groundwater needed for crops, but diverted to growing flowers for Americans in the middle of winter.
Fort *Greene* Park Farmer’s Market, I should have typed.
@ #21 Char: I believe Lesterhead is referring to Choice’s SECOND location, which will be more of a market.
If Green Planet is really a market, with fresh fruits and vegetables and the like then I don’t see how it could fail. Especially being right by the train!
I’m excited about all of these changes. I’ve never liked Karrot due to the unreliable stock and REALLY high prices–they make Whole Foods look like a bargain.
That said, if we want these new stores to make it, if they’re good they’re not going to be super-cheap. High quality produce (e.g., what’s not sold at area grocery stores) costs more. And if it doesn’t sell, you have to throw it out. Combine this with fairly expensive real estate, and you’re not going to have bargain shopping.
The folks at Associated are really nice, but unfortunately too much of what they sell smells and sometimes tastes like disinfectant…therefore I buy little fresh food there.
so thrilled by all the food!! Does ANYONE know when provisions will open? I have been stalking it. It was slated to open doors on the 11th….might have to do another walk by today unless anyone has insider tips?
I went to buy lemons at the associated and they were all gross and some moldy. barf. Next time I will walk 8 blocks
I love Fresh Garden and often stop on my way home but wonder if the neighborhood can support all these new ventures.
I’ve heard talk of a coop, which would be great only if there were room for it.
my sister is involved in a farm co-op in CH and loves it but she is a real chef and enjoys finding end uses for bagloads of Chard etc. but she has time to play around with food and not everyone does. I would participate in a second and would welcome a co-op. Hopefully we have enough food people in the hood to support all of these places. My guess is yes.
@ 27 foodie: I walked by Provisions over the weekend, and it didn’t look even close to opening.
to #39 – thanks…called Green Grape and they are going to have a soft opening (dry goods?) Saturday at Provisions and it will be the real deal by Monday.
i love that all these are opening.
seems like grocery/food shopping is one thing that is slightly on the skimpy side in this neighborhood,
so anything is welcome, especially where i can potentially buy REAL cheese.
i actually wish some of these markets would stay open later – associated on waverly just closes too early!
i don’t even ask for much, maybe just till 9-10pm.
Fulton = where it’s at!
Three cheers for Union Market. We hit up their original location every now and then since it’s across the street from our vet.
sounds like the new one will be a fair walk for us, but it’s still exciting.
I may have to give the Associated another shot due to all the recommendations. I gave up on it due to its “friendly” employees–who I am guessing were friendly in another way than most of you are discussing–as in stockboys following me around the store cat calling at me. Not a fun shopping experience
yes i agree totally sarah. some of the employees are way too friendly in a creepy way to women. and the new organic offerings are way overpriced too
GREEN PLANET IS OPEN!!
i stopped in this weekend – the shelves were a little bare; i am looking forward to see what products will be stocked. and the produce looks good – fresher than MET. and best of bests is the huge wall of self service priced-per-pound grains, nuts, fruits and granola.
Karrot too crunchy? Well it IS a Health Food Store and I for one am grateful to have one in our neighborhood. The service is very friendly and if you think the prices are high..well it’s a health food store first off. You’re going to pay more for quality things but also it’s a VERY small business. Their last location (on Grand) went out of business. So support these places people! Spend the extra couple of dollars at independently run stores!
nice place to get your vitamins but way over priced in the grocery section mets is mucher chiper 20 cents here 10 cents sometimes but u never know they might change up
