Received this email from a reader, who coincidentally went to the same high school as I did (small world!):
I have a quick question to ask – I’ve been trying to read the blog for any
suggestions on gluten-free food/ideas in the FG/CH area. I’ve been diagnosed
with Celiacs for over four years now, and it’s been really tough to find
gluten-free products in the area. I know of the organic food store on
Myrtle (Karrots), and the Met on Fulton is hit or miss (but they seem to have the GF
beer), and the Associated on Myrtle carries a small selection. Any chance
you could make a request/post about it in an upcoming blog entry?
Ideas? I’d also suggest:
- Green Planet (Fulton at Washington)
- Fresh Garden (Fulton and Lafayette)
- Provisions (Fulton at S. Portland)
(More info on these places here.)

Hope this helps.
i think that Urban Spring has some cookies that are gluten free, made of pumpkin seeds. They’re really good. They may have more gluten free products, too.
They have gluten-free stuff — cookies and brownie mix, etc. — at the grocery store on Lafayette and S. Elliott (right next to 67 Burger.)
Hi all – I’m the reader that made the request to our faithful blogger
Thanks for all your suggestions. I’m also looking for any suggestions on restuarants in the FG/CH area. Eating out is always a challenge for a Celiac, because of the hidden “issues” with cross-contamination.
Thanks again!
I know FreshDirect groups all their G-Free goods in a list…

it seems that red bamboo might be sensitive (although they prepare seitan – gluten). some of the african restaurants don’t have a lot in the way of bread or wheat dishes so that may help. definitely urban spring (but thats not going to feed you dinner). i am off gluten recently too, so this is a great, timely question, and i have to tell you – its hard! chavellas for mex if you avoid the flour tortillas (most of theirs are corn though so that should be pretty safe). chinese and sushi are good bets – but we don’t have any *great* ones around here. i think rice would do well. maybe you could start a sub blog on chb – gluten free chb…definitely keep us all updated.
i went to luz and chez lola with a friend who has the same issue, and they were very very accomodating to her. both places helped her create dishes slightly off the menu (neither place was busy at that time, which must have helped) … and she was very happy. they made her feel comfortable. thats one of the reasons why i love our little neighborhood.
chinese actually is not a good bet. Most of the sauces have soy sauce in them, which is one of thoes “hidden” gluten ridden rprodcuts. I have found that mexican food, thai food (pad thai is usually ALWAYS gluten free) and Vietnamese food are the best for dealing with gluten free diets. I have also found that many of the vegetairan substitutions like boca burgers and red bamboo have wheat protein in the fake chicken and stuff. But also check out Rice on Dekalb, because all of their dishes use rice and deserts. I am not certain if it is completley gluten free, but it seems like an easy bet.
There is a new health food store opening on Myrtle near Washington. They don’t have any stock yet.
