Summer hike in subway, bus services

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has a message for Queens subway and bus commuters: Ride on!
It looks like the dollars are coming in faster than expected to the MTA, thanks to increased ridership, particularly in Queens.
Under a new plan, NYC Transit would begin implementing increased service – valued at approximately $46 million annually – as early as June.
The proposals will not be implemented until after the financial results for the first quarter of 2008 have been received, Transit spokesman Charles Seaton said.
Starting in June, the 7 and W lines will see increases in service to accommodate boosts in ridership on those lines.
The 7 line would increase Saturday service frequency from six to 10 minutes to five to eight minutes, and Sunday service frequency from six to 10 minutes to six to eight minutes starting in June.
W service would be extended from 9:30 to 11 p.m., and there would be an increase in peak hour service frequency from four to five minutes to four minutes.
In December, the G and R lines will see increases in service frequency.
The G would increase service frequency by 50% weekday evenings (from 12-15 minutes to eight minutes); 20% weekday middays (from 10 minutes to eight minutes); and 33% on weekends (eight-10 minutes to six minutes).
This boost will require terminating the G at the Courthouse Square station in Long Island City, because the Queens Blvd. line does not have capacity for more G service.
Extended R service would operate to Forest Hills-71st Ave. at all times; replacing the G along Queens Blvd. and allowing the N to operate via Manhattan Bridge at all times.
Queens bus lines also will see service increases, and will include a new Bx50 limited-stop bus route between Fordham Plaza in the Bronx and LaGuardia Airport, and a new Q94 super-limited service between Flushing and Fordham Plaza to reduce travel time on the route by up to 20 minutes and meet growing demand for Queens-Bronx travel.
Public hearings must be held before the Bx50 and Q94 services can be implemented. Plans call for the Bx50 to begin service in December, while the Q94 would begin in September.
Transit officials said 10 other Queens bus lines will either see increases in hours or extensions to their routes.
They include the: Q12; Q27; Q31; Q42; Q59; Q75: Q76; Q77; Q79 and Q84.
50% increase?! YES, YES, YES!
What do you think about the permanent termination at Court Square? For me, if it means way more G service, fine by me!

….and the people in queens who used it past Court Square?
It really is all about you, isn’t it?
No wonder this blog has turned into a POS.
whenever i’ve gone to queens, i end up having to change at court sq anyway, since i want to change to the E or the 7 – the rest of the G train has 5 trains running on the line so I don’t think other people will suffer…
yeah LH this blog is a POS! you can take your interest in things that directly affect you and go to hell. POS!
Calm down. For those of us who ride in the morning rush hour, what the G could really use is a full complement of 8, or even just 6, cars. It’s ridiculous to get on the Smith-9th bound train at Clinton-Washington, have to run down the platform 50 yards to where the train actually stops, and then be crammed in there like it’s the 6 train. Not that us neighbors don’t love being huddled together.
Hey, if the choice is more G service by us and terminating at Ct. Sq, then yes, I choose that one! They have a bunch more trains up there running on the same line! How many times have you guys been waiting after work for ages at Hoyt-Schermerhorn on a cramped platform?
The G hasn’t gone past Court Square in ages, and I’m sure Queens-ites can adapt without it. After all, at Court Square you can get the 7, E & F — all great trains to travel through Queens.
I take the G every day from Clinton / Washington to Court Square and change for the 7 to go further into Queens, and it’s no problem.
I would LOVE for more frequent service – that is really what we need. Although the extra cars would be nice too, I above all else, advocate for increased service. (Particularly late at night – past 8pm when I’ve waited for 30 minutes!)
Thanks for the update LH. Great news.
i take the g train from clinton/washington to hoyt every morning and from ct. square back to clinton/washington every evening rush and all i have to say is YEAH! Now, if they would only increase the # of cars too we’d be in real business and have a line comperable to every other line in the city.
To poster #1:
“….and the people in queens who used it past Court Square? It really is all about you, isn’t it?”
Er…no, this is a blog about and for people in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Which is why it’s called “Clinton Hill Blog” instead of “Clinton Hill And Some Parts Of Queens Once In A While Blog.”
Titles aren’t just arbitrary.
My point is that she seems to bitch about everything. Waiting too long for the bus on Greene (yes when you can WALK to to Lafayette station in 12 minutes), a missing mailbox (when she could WALK to one 2 blocks away), a $60 parking ticket (why do you have a car in the city?).
If she lived past Court Square and they were cutting service you BET she would be bitching about that.
I had a whole response written to “guest,” until I realized it is not necessary to justify my having a car in the city to him or her. I do have a reason, and if you knew me personally, you would know what it is (and at that point, pass judgment based on that reason).
No one is forcing anyone to read this blog. If you think this site is a POS, why are you reading it?
You could always start your own blog, if you don’t like mine.
And back to the mailbox — it’s not like they’re on every corner, and it IS a pain that it’s missing.
when there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.
When has the “G” EVER gone past Court Square?
The ways of the MTA are so mysterious. I’m sure if I worked in whatever MTA department of planning there is, their service changes would make sense. Like why when the C local train is cancelled, the A express goes over the local track. Why not just cancel the A? And here they say that Court Sq cannot handle more G trains. Why can a station not handle more trains passing through per hour? Weird. But yes, it seems like the G train doesn’t go past Court very often anyway. The frequency is a lot better than it used to be, in my perception, but I’ve never understood why it had so fewer cars. I hate having to run after it!
The G never comes in 10 minutes! If you miss it you have to wait at LEAST 20 minutes especially on weekends. So if they say the times will be 8 minutes, I’ll believe it when that train comes…
Lesterhead, sorry there have been a bunch of bratty kids (or at least that’s what their comments sound like) on this site lately talking down about this blog. This blog is great and it would be great if they stopped reading and commenting. (If they have a problem it’s simple -stop coming to this site, which is about the good, the bad, the new and what needs to change). Keep up the posts! I love reading about things and the comments from people in the neighborhood (even if it’s to say they didn’t like the service in the restaurant – it’s good to get real reviews).
I agree, this blog is great. I love to read the posts and the comments (but not comments like “guest” and “wobash” above – start your own blog about the hood if you aren’t into this one).
Great indeed, your blog is a daily visit for me, and always informative and enterataining about the goings on in our wonderful ‘hood. Keep up the good work!!!
excuse me, GEEZ, but i write a lot of worthwhile commentary on this blog and have been a supporter of it from the beginning. i am entitled to say something off the cuff once in awhile directed towards those zombies who post irreverent and blatantly cruel commentary toward the host: lesterhead.
Oh, duh, it never occurred to me why the G almost never runs past Court Sq. But yes, there are a lot of trains on the rest of the line. I just wish it would go one more stop; the Queens Plaza transfer is a lot easier, and if you want the F or R, you have to transfer twice. But I can live with it, and I’ll be happy to see more G trains.

….So if you’re complaining about a perceived bitchy tone, why bring up Queens at all? Or would bitching about things that inconvenience Queens be okay?
…It would be easier to write your own blog than pressure someone else to write to your specifications. Just a thought.
complaining about someone else complaining…ironic
Does anyone have an update on when the G is going to be extended past Smith-Ninth? Thought that was happening this year. Sure would make visiting Park Slope easier.
And yes – more cars please!
