I’ve heard some really great things about Sushi Okdol on Myrtle Avenue, but only tried takeout once and found it…meh. Just received this reader note:
wanted to suggest that you check out sushi okdol
we go there at least once a week with our kids- and it’s almost always empty. the sushi is fine- but things like bib bim bop and soon du bu jigae are very good and very authentic. they are great with the kids- always bring them soup and rice immediately – and tofu- and sushi- etc
we actually had our 5 year old’s birthday party there last year- and probably will again this year.
it’s the place above the deli on myrtle- across from the associated.
You may haven’t even noticed this place, being that it’s on the second floor of the building (497 Myrtle at Hall). I don’t have children (yet), but it’s nice to hear there’s a place for cool parents to dine on ethnic foods that the kids can enjoy, too.
Any other reviews?

I used to like it years ago but stopped going when the quality went down.
Since then I saw that they were in danger of being shut down by the board of health and I don’t think they have ever recovered.

It has actually been there for several years now. I think it was advertised as Japanese & Korean.
Thank you user01 for the great link. you can type in the zip code & see all the local violations !
if you are going to use the health department link then you need to know how to read it.
where does it say they were/are in danger of being shut down by the board of health?
A failed inspection ( unless there is major food contamination or vermin present) will not result in being closed down or almost closed down ~ a 40 score although failing is not cause for immediate or almost closure of an establishment
You will notice that the board of health hasnt inspected in over 1 year and did no follow up to the last failed inspection- Does that sound like a place that was almost closed down ?
This is just like when another commentator claimed that the board of health seized the Met’s food slicer and then after being challenged about that comment – recanted and said Met was “coerced” into replacing the slicer
i used to frequent sushi okdol when i first moved into the neighborhood – 5+ years ago – and i agree that the quality went down – about 3 years ago. the last time i ate there was close to 1+ yrs ago – maybe the quality has risen? i do recall the place being pretty empty – but also i felt like it wasnt that clean. and i believe that it is owned by koreans, therefore thats why the korean is better than the japanese.
What I think is neat is that they’re going to have their 5 year old’s birthday party there again.
“we actually had our 5 year old’s birthday party there last year- and probably will again this year.”
Man if eating there once a week means you stop aging then I’ve got to start eating there for sure.
Why would you when there’s Yamashiro. Ate in the restaurant once or twice and it’s nothing to write home about.
if you go, go there for the Korean not the Japanese. but it does seem a bit run-down inside and no people in there makes it feel weird. i always thought that if they did a tasteful remodel and especially made the entrance and stairs more inviting, they might be able to get lots of people to dine in. BTW, there’s a new Korean place on Vanderbuilt in Prospect Heights just off Atlantic, and it’s great!
It is very reasonable in price, tasty. The staff are very friendly. The decor, well, maybe you could call it an ironic reference to the ethnic restaurants and diners of 50 years ago. Yeah, that’s right it isn’t rundown or overly bright, it is a sly reference to the era when we were fighting a cold (as in brrr) war rather than one in the desert.
LimestoneKid your joke would have made sense if they had written “we had our kid’s fifth birthday party last year there and will again this year.” As written however the original message was clear. Okay now it is time for me to step away from the keyboard….
When I went here in person it was rather good – when I ordered I would get 3-4 pieces of negimaki – less pieces than in person with other fish…. when a business knows I cannot argue about what I pay for and what they deliver then I do not order from them and I have not for a couple of years…… Castros, El Cofre and Liberty Pizza have been great and I stick with them. I wish I could order Korean and Japanese……… eh
Yep, the original message IS clear.
Children don’t age when they eat at Sushi Okdol.
i’m usually wary of places that advertises themselves as serving two very different cuisines, and from different countries at that. don’t think i’ll be visiting any time soon.
Jeez, before you lecture people on how to use the DOH website maybe you should take a refresher course yourself. Using a simple feature called “search” you will find that a follow-up inspection was indeed done 3 weeks later and the place received a passing score of 16. Anything over a score of 28 can cause the restaurant to be shut down if it does not correct the violations. So before you start running your mouth do a little more research…..jackass
we eat at and order from okdol all the time, love it. the sushi isn’t fantastic, but yamashiro’s isn’t any better, imo. and what really sells okdol is the people who work there/own it, they’re so nice and friendly. the service when we go there is great, and they always make little extra treats for my son (ikura hand rolls, etc) and make and bring his food out first, which is really helpful, as any parent knows, when you’re dining out with a 3-yr old….
Since Japan ruled Korea for a while, saying that you won’t go to a place which serves both Japanese and Korean is like saying you won’t eat at, shoot – I started this sentence without knowing where it would end up. And Limestone Kid, now that I think of it Fiona hasn’t grown much this past year… (I was aguest at aforementioned magical birthday party)
Didn’t anyone see the news story from about 2 weeks ago saying they have found NY sushi resteraunts to have dangerously high levels of chemicals like mercury.
