I smelled this building before I saw it, on Bedford and Gates (1124 Bedford). It’s the smell of damp, rotting wood. I’ve smelled it before when old haunted houses get pried open for renovations.
The place is huge. According to Brownstoner, the building was once the Bed-Stuy Community Mental Health Center. A Google search for the organization puts it currently at 1121 Bedford, just across the street (the same address as the YMCA). How long was this building in use? How long has it been closed?

I remember there was a Bohack supermarket there when I was younger and after that I dont remember anything else. That was over 25 years at least.

I live two blocks away from this building and pass it every day while out with my dogs. While a furniture restorer used the ground floor and parking lot to sell his wares, I always hoped it would be bought and brought back to life, sadly its beautiful facade is being slowly ripped apart and I can’t help but imagine another horrifying glass and steel condo being put in its place. Why can’t people appreciate architecture anymore?
I think Bstoner may have posted something about this place being demolished for some development…
Damn, really?…
See, this is why I need money — I use that Bedford St. YMCA, and every time I’ve passed this building I keep thinking it would be a great site for some kind of community center. I personally was thinking something like a combination cooking school/bakery/cheese shop.
…I wish I weren’t broke.
