Bike Lanes in the 'Hood

Since I’ve been biking a lot lately, I’ve come to realize how wonderful bike lanes actually are.  I’m pleased to say that we now have a bike lane on both Myrtle AND DeKalb!  However, I have noticed that the DeKalb bike lane seems to be contributing to the bottle necking that happens around Classon Ave, causing a backup.

It’s not actually the bike lane that’s causing this.

The cause is the police parking.  Cop cars cut off an entire lane just west of Classon on DeKalb, and now that practice has become even more dangerous.  Look at these pics sent to me by a reader:

This intersection has already become a traffic nightmare, and now cyclists have to divert out into traffic that’s already dangerous.  Surely there must be a better way to arrange this.  With a huge increase in neighborhood traffic (especially on Sundays with the Flea), this isn’t cool.

Speaking of bike lanes, WE NEED ONE ON LAFAYETTE AVENUE!!!  ASAP!!!

  1. Totally. I hate blocked bike lanes. And cops parking however they want – that’s a whole other tangent… But it is also the traffic…morning rush hour traffic between franklin and classon has been a nightmare for a while. And now that it’s only one lane, it’s ridiculous.

  2. Yeah, the cops parking wherever they darn well please IS a whole other issue.

Hmmm with gas @ $4+/gallon having more bike lanes makes sense.

  3. I just rode through here last night and was thinking the same thing… In fact, I’m not sure how they even got the lane painted since the cop cars are ALWAYS there. And just beyond the cop cars, there’s that dumpster out in the middle of the street. Great.

Anyway, it’s little wonder why the police don’t enforce laws against parking/passing/driving cars in the bike lane…

  4. Another problem with that intersection is that the right lane isn’t clear in the morning like it’s supposed to be. Trucks are still allowed to make deliveries, so the street becomes effectively one lane. The right lane NEEDS to be kept clear for the morning commute for that street to function properly.

  5. This post just made Gothamist. Congrats!

And the bike land on DeKalb always has cars zipping down it to bypass the one lane of car traffic that has come to a stop.

Gee, the filth doing as they please. Who’da thunk it? Try the stretch of Adams St going from the Fulton Mall to the Bridge. You can’t even see the lane most times because of the solid line of cop cars and liveries constantly parked over it.

You know, they can draw all over the blacktop in any which way they please, but until our bike lanes are actually separated from traffic, with a barrier of some sort, it’s just paint.

  11. I actually find another big problem with the bike lanes are other bikers, believe it or not. Without the bike lanes, bikers obey one-way street rules — but with a bike lane, they seem to forget that. I once encountered FIVE people riding the wrong way in a one-way bike lane on a single three-block bike ride.

A Lafayette Ave Bike Lane will relieve a good portion of the clusterf*ck on DeKalb Ave.

I bike to work at Pratt every morning Mon-Friday and this intersection is a major problem for me. It’s totally dangerous and it also feels kind of hopeless because it’s like, well who can you call to fix it?? As a side note, last week on Dekalb a police car was swerving out of car traffic into the bike lane, then passing cars and going back into the car lane, then swerving back into the bike lane, etc. This is, of course, totally illegal for cars and dangerous for bikers (like me, who was behind the cop car.) What is up with the police in this precinct?

All you liberals need to stop whining, I know it will be hard to do knowing you’re spineless and it’s in your DNA. Ninety percent of bicyclists do not follow the NYS Law required of bicyclists riding on public streets. So when these reckless and careless bicyclists are creating more havoc and dangerous conditions caused by their own behavior, it’s hard to feel compassion for cry baby wannabe hippies who utter a low, usually nasal whimper over blocked bicycle lanes when it’s not utilized properly.
