Many thanks to reader Philip for emailing me a camera phone picture of the cop cars in front of the 88th precinct on DeKalb Avenue at Classon. After I posted about their cars blocking the street’s new bike lane, they’ve switched to regular old parallel parking (you know, like the rest of us have to!).
Thanks also to Gothamist and Streetsblog (and I’m sure many others) for picking up this story.
Let’s hope this is a permanent gesture. It’s days like today that I’m really psyched to be a community blogger. (BTW, where did they put the other cars?)

Maybe they’re using them to patrol the neighborhood? Maybe rolling slowly past the drug dealer I pass every morning on my way to the Clinton Washington stop and waving and saying “good day to you sir”? Ah, if only.
or maybe they are going out to find the maraurding gangs of teenagers!
To be pessimistic, I would say the reason they are parked parallel is because they only need parking spots for the two cars. When the rest come back from whatever they’re doing (see options above), they’ll resort back to backing in. Can we see successful day shots to confirm?
oops..meant successive instead of “successful” in the last sentence.
Nice! Let’s hope it lasts…
wow. fantastic. nicely done, lesterhead.
I was really excited to see the post about illegal parking, but unfortunately, it’s back to business as usual as far as I’m concerned. They are still parking illegally, as well as not giving people tickets for parking their cars illegally in bike lanes. I was very excited for the new bike lane on Dekalb, but after this morning spent dodging cars pulling into the bike lane and cars parked in the bike lane (including at least one police car), I’m starting to wonder if it even matters. Honestly, dodging cars in this way feels almost more dangerous.
Um wasn’t the original complaint about cop cars parking on DeKalb not on Classon?
Hows the police parking on DeKalb?
But don’t hurt your arm patting yourself on the back.
As for the extra cars, they’re parked all around the precinct. Most of them are now on Classon mixed in with other cars instead of all being lined up together as they used to.
@jack: day 2 and they’re still properly parked. There are the same number of cars as always, they’re just dispersed now.
@ummm: The before and after photos are both on Dekalb, this precinct is on the corner of Dekalb and Classon
About three weeks ago I happened upon a serial bike-thief in front of the Barnes & Noble Textbook Store on 5th Ave @ 18th Street in the Union Square area. I showed two police officers who were nearby in a cruiser. They tried to catch him, bt were unsuccessful at the time, hope they’ve gotten him since. What I learned was that this guy had stolen another bike near Paragon Sports (18th Street @ Broadway) a few minutes before.
Apparently these thiefs sell stolen bikes to restaurants whose delivery employees use them to bring everyone their pizzas, Chinese food, etc…
See the video I took in the link below.

Dude, read the post again. Lesterhead says “Dekalb avenue at Classon.”
But don’t break your arm patting yourself on the head for a snarky comment.
The cops seemed to have stopped parking in the bike lane, but the big garbage bins from the schools are still blocking the lane (just 100 yards or so down the street from this picture).
did you ever stop to think that maybe the cops parked that way so they could pull out quicker in emergency situations to save some of your lives? but whats more important, you riding your 2 wheel speed racer or a police officer getting to the scene after one of the boys from the hood pushes you off that racer and steals your shit

i agree, with the last poster..is parking really such an issue..the city gives them no lot to park in so why blame the police..ever think of complaining to the mayor..i dont want the police circling around looking for spots while im being robbed, or taking up all the regular spots in the area now considering they work long hours..you also put there safety in danger forcing them to stray farther away from the command before and after work walking to their cars, when people who they areested live and hangout in areas around the command..your all thick headed and care about ur fukin bikes and the bike lane..its one block that u have to deal with..get a lifee seriously, instead of appreciating the people who serve ur community doing a job none of us want or signed up for you complain about where they park..last i checked the guy on the bike wasnt showin up when i got robbed last year, nor did anyone help..they may have called the policee but people just watched..these people are risking their lives for their community, there payy suckss so in the least let them park in peace, im sorry but all you people who complain know dam well noone on the street is going to help you..they are the only ones coming, so for us people who need protection and help, ride ur bike down a diff block if it bothers you soo bad..dont make bad relations with the cops that patrol our streets and watch our children, the last thing we need is pissed off officers driving around saying u know what” fukk these people, they want to givee me a hard time, ill make sure i rush over to that call for help..maybe ill get there and look for a parking spot, while someone gets their ass kicked inside the house, just soo the bike lane isnt blocked cuzzz god forbidd u have to stop pedadlling for a minute…
