Several of you emailed me over the weekend about the former June space, which has suddenly turned into a new restaurant: The General Greene!
I have to say, this place seems like it has the potential to be pretty cool. First, the name: a play on a general store / outpost AND a shout-out to General Nathanael Greene for whom the neighborhood and park are named.
Inside, it looks bright and airy:
Apparently it was open this past weekend for a sneak peek. Anyone go??? It wasn’t open Monday or Tuesday. (Believe me, I have been walking by incessantly.)

My fiance and I went – I had a Pimm’s Cup (was called something different) and he had an old fashioned both were very tasty and went down easy. We just had dinner at black iris so we passed on the food but everything looked yummy. It was smart that he cut the bar in half and made the front space open for tables as well as brought in some “picnic” tables by the windows. I can’t wait to go back, it was packed when we were there too. I think they are going for a gastropub vibe, it reminded me of Spitzer’s Corner in LES. GOOD LUCK!!
I met the owner who said the official opening is July 1st. Until then they will e serving drinks and having friends and family over. He lived in Paris for a while and is originally from San Francisco, so think French American influences. The furniture was made from wood from an old warehouse that was being taken a part near Myrtle and Classon.
Can we all say it together: “Yupp-eeeee, yupp-eeeee…” So sad, what’s happening ’round here.
Why would an influx of ‘yuppee’ influence be sad? Having lived in Jamaica, Astoria, Williamsburg and now Fort Greene, I can assure you that no matter how many ‘yuppee’ types open up establishments here, Ft Greene will always remain one of the most culturally diverse and interestingly mixed hoods in NYC. Let the yuppees come, I dig their food and flipped up collars!!
What is the yuppie part? Wood? Mixed drinks? French influence?
You can still get Crown Fried Chicken if you want cheap food. It’s right up the street. (I recommend the burgers).
uh yeah…This only about the umpteenth restaurant to open in the area recently. What about this place exactly makes it the yuppeee tipping point?
Not only is it the umpteenth restaurant in the area, it’s the umpteenth restaurant IN THAT SPACE!
Why is everyone calling it a restaurant when they only served “bar food” ? Are they going to have a full menue ? Thank you Dora Chica for letting us know the opening date. As I was confused when I saw they were already closed with the Drinks & Bar Food Menue taken out of the window this past Sunday.
ps … how is it Yuppie beyond the fact that you need money to be able to go out ?.
You want to see yupeeeeee go to the farmer’s market at Prospect Park. It’s pretty awesome here.
i dunno bout this place $4 for bar nuts????? i mean c’mon people. i wish them luck but there’s no way to validate having a price attached to bar nuts…
I think the design looks great! it’s not easy opening a new restaurant these days with all the expenses and rent so I hope all you cheap asses stay home so I can get a table! I wish them the best of luck!! also, I just bought a can of nuts at the assosiated and they were almost $6.00.
$4 nuts is harsh. You got bars in Williamsburg giving out free pizza or salsa and chips.
I would suggest offering free edamame.
General Greene was awesome and friendly, they have substantive and yummy snacks that ranged in price from $2 (for 2 delicious hardboiled pickled eggs on a bed of mild mustard) to $8 or so, and a very good selection of beer & wine. The cocktails were good too. We’ll definitely be back for the eggplant dip and the maple-black pepper ribs!
last coment sounds like a shill
who cares. if you’re hungry try it out. if you don’t like it i don’t want to hear about it. if you have something constructive to say about the food, service and beverages i’m all ears. last one in is a rotten egg! (maybe the nuts are hand picked organic)
and fair traded!
Geesh, people it’s better to have more options than less! If you don’t like the price of something than don’t buy it. It’s not that difficult. There are plenty of places to go to. Shit, even papa johns delivers here. What we need is a good polish joint.
we don’t NEED anything, do we? that’s a pretty charged word.
anyway, the general is a nice place and the food is good, the staff is friendly. we went this afternoon and i found nothing to complain about. food costs money. at restaurants especially.
no, i am not a shill, geez, just thought i’d post something positive because this got overrun with complaints about “yuppie”-ness so fast. everyone was so nice to us there and the food was so good. the cocktails are pricey but otherwise it’s one of the cheaper sit-down places on dekalb actually, you can fill up there for less than any entree at loulou or chez oskar or kif. but hey, if whoever’s complaining wants to stick to pizza, great — i just hope they get enough support to stay in business. i’m sure the remodel wasn’t cheap.
[...] Hill Blog, Maggie Brown, Red Bamboo, The General Greene I’m skeptical of this new restaurant The General Greene. Partially because it’s opening in the old space of June — which seemed sort of shady [...]
We went on Saturday and had a nice time. I was really impressed with the renovation. The waitstaff was very attentive and really wanted to know what we thought of things. Unlike most new openings in the ‘hood, I felt like they had their act together. I thought the drink prices were fair. They only had half the menu ready (which they told us when we walked in). I thought the portion sizes were a bit small for the price. Other than that, the food was good, although I would like a bigger selection (some of the items were a little adventurous for us). In terms of the bar nuts, they were definitely worth $4 as they were quite yummy!
So I take it from the comment about the new owner being Parisian that this is not the same person who owned June, then?
Which is a good thing. June was ahem…more than a little shady, and the owner was most definitely NOT well-versed in how to run a restaurant. He may have had money, but made so many mistakes with June that it kept driving hordes of customers away.
Sorry, I guess I see this hew owner is from San Fran by way of Paris.
I wish in that space. It sure needs it.
who are you anyway, with all the traveling down my block you blog of i must know you, its such a fun mystery?!
JD you’ll laugh. I was crushed when I found out that the Polish Bar on Myrtle was going to be a nail salon. I was hoping for pierogies.
mmmm . . . I love pierogies. and kielbasa sammies. . .
Went last night. The staff was awesome. Very attentive, and friendly. And though I hate “small plates” restaurants (I think everyone is growing tired of them) the food was top-notch, too. But there were a couple of things that bugged me. One, if they are going for a “general store” vibe, they should do away with the sexy jams that you hear at just about every other restaurant in the neighborhood. I don’t know why restaurant managers think people want to hear dance music while they’re eating. How about playing some nice old-school jazz, big band or juke-joint-style music, instead? It would work much better, and create a more relaxing vibe.
This should be the kind of place you want to go to after work just to hang out, relax, drink a few pints, and binge on some affordable food. Speaking of affordable food, they should add some cheaper options to the menu, too. How about some nachos or wings or something like that? I know, it’s low class, but I just don’t want this place to turn into yet another too-cool-for-its-own-good “small plates” joint that’s more of scene than it needs to be. Also, while I like the jelly jar glass thing for the beers, I would much prefer pints (I felt like I was getting ripped off a little). Still, I’ll go back. The place seems promising.
OMG! I went last nite, it is terrible. Won’t last til October…
PS: Get some fish!!!! If you’re out of the only fish on your menu, go to the market, get some and create a special!!! Get some real wine!!! Get ride of the thousands waiters on your staff!!!
I just went last Saturday night (IN NOVEMBER) and it was great. There was a limited waitstaff and only 2 people in the kitchen. The portions were larger than I expected. All in all my friend and I had a great time. We tried 6 entree dishes and two desserts and all of them were quite good. Even the lentils which I don’t always like. The salted caramel ice cream was yummy!
