A few days ago, a reader sent me this intriguing email:
as bizarre as it is, i just noticed that a fresh fruit and vegetable market is opening on atlantic avenue right around grand (towards classon on the prospect heights/crown heights side of the street). it’s the produce equivalent of frank white — meaning, they’re putting a lot of work into the space and it’s going to be really nice, but it will probably ultimately suffer from its atlantic ave location (zero foot traffic).
i can’t understand why they wouldn’t choose fulton for this very necessary place, i guess the rents are a lot cheaper on atlantic.
Readers, this is why I love you. Because I would probably never, ever be walking around in that particular area and this is a very exciting tip!
It was not easy to find. I walked down a very desolate section of Atlantic, populated only by auto repair and restaurant equipment retailers, all completely shuttered on a Sunday afternoon. But then, I saw it: two gorgeous wooden planters with green fern spilling over at a storefront on the south side of the street.
The beauty of the fruit (both standard and exotic), as well as the interior renovation was shockingly gorgeous. Where on earth did this place come from?!
The owner (whose name escapes me, since I didn’t write it down), said he expects to be fully operational within the next few days. He is also open to suggestions on what people would like to see him carry!
People, check it out, NOW.

awesome, i’m checking it out today! (confession: i’m the reader that sent you the original email)
BERRIES that aren’t ridiculously expensive!
That’s great. Is it on the block between Grand and St. James (i.e. same as Frank White), or between Grand and Classon?
I heard a rumor that the guys from Choice are considering opening a place on Atlantic, near Grand Avenue. I hope that is true. It would be interesting if Atlantic develops more rapidly than Fulton Street, especially since Fulton has the subway right there and is not as difficult to cross from a traffic perspective.
Ultimately, the Fulton Street Business Improvement District, which is in the final stages of approval, will hopefully provide some needed investment stimulus as well.
FANTASTIC! wish I still lived in that area! but when i am over there, i will make it a point to stop in.
U saw this place in its prep stages and was sure it was going to be some sort of restaurant from the exterior. What a fancy place for fruits and veggies. The interior is nice, very different. I like , I like.Good luck to them.
Oops..meant to say I saw this place .
“U” works as well. I was betting restaurant during the planning process too.
This is such great news! Anyone know what their hours are like?
Stopped in last night with a friend. I wouldn’t say the fruit was “gorgeous” — some of it was a little wrinkled. But the prices were very good and the owner was very nice. He said in two weeks they will have a juice bar. I mentioned that I thought it was a difficult location but he said he thought it would be all right good and that it was something that was needed in the community (I didn’t feel right about questioning him on rent, business planning, etc.). My nectarine was fresh and tasty and my friend enjoyed her peach — I also took a plum and a mango (the mangoes were $1.50, which is a lot cheaper than mangoes I’ve seen this season). Don’t know the hours but it was certainly nice to see someone with a friendly, community-minded attitude trying to make a living. There was a woman with a newborn baby in the store who seemed like his wife or a family member, so I really hope they can make it!
I’m going to be the killjoy and say that this looks like the Atlantic Avenue equivalent of the “healthy living / vitamin store” run by the russians on Myrtle. I’m sorry, but pineapples displayed on a fireplace mantle? Is there a seating area? how cute would that be if they thru some wrought iron bistro tables, served up small plates along with smoothies. Kind of reminds me of this fantastic spot I went to everyday when I was in Granada. That being said, I wish them well and will run over there later to stock up on those mangos.
looks awesome. I’m going tonight!
