I noticed this nicely-designed sign on Fulton and Putnam over the weekend, and I hadn’t noticed it before:
This is a shockingly pretty sign coming from the city. Additional irony is earned from the crappiness of Fulton Street and the ridiculousness of the street renovations that have been going on now for, oh, two or three years.
I have high hopes, now that we’ve been afforded a city B.I.D.

That sign’s been there for at least a few weeks.
I used to work for a non-profit that got some city money to renovate their building, with the DDC overseeing the project. They buried the project in so much red tape, delays, conflicting requirements and standards, it was like a parody of Kafka. After three years, the organization finally got out of having DDC as their project manager, and their rather modest construction project was completed within a few months. So my heart sinks whenever I see that DDC sign up somewhere.
I am soooooo tired of the construction on Fulton and the snails pace it is moving at. A disgrace, pure and simple disgrace. I know this project wouldnt be so lengthy in another neighborhood.
Think Hudson street in the West Village in the 90s. It took forever.
Or how about the Houston st construction which has been going on for about 5 years. The only good thing about the construction is that it makes it easier to ride one’s bike east on fulton since there’s a defacto bike lane on the south side of the street.
The frustrating thing about this is that weeks go by with maybe a day or two of work being done. They are several months behind schedule. I don’t get it.
That ‘dorm-like building’ with the wonky awning actually is a dorm – the Pratt Institute’s Graduate Dormitory. Inside is nice but utilitarian – there are pictures on the Pratt website, i think.
