A few commenters beat me to mentioning the fro-yo on Fulton. Houseowax says it was pricey and overly sweet.
After a frustrating day at work the other day, I took the express train home and walked from DeKalb. I came across two interesting things:
1. The delicious but bizarre restaurant New Orleans seems to have closed! Based on the service I had there last winter, I’m amazed it stayed open this long.
2. Looks like Fort Greene is about to be home to a chi-chi fro-yo shop. I hope it tastes just like Eks at half the price. (just past Lafayette)

That restaurant has been closed for a couple of weeks. Several evenings I’ve walked past and people were in there; seemingly just hanging out, sometimes it seemed like they were making or selling crafts or decor or something out of the storefront.
silver spoons, the yogurt place, was open when i walked by it yesterday.
i wonder what the taste is like?
Stuff White People Love: overrated and overpriced frozen yogurt
u must be a very smart person cdawgg!
God, that blog was relevant for about 1 week in early January.
What is with this froyo crud popping up all over the place? Late 80s nostalgia?
It sucked the first time around.
I do love frozen yogurt but I have to agree- what gives with the fancy fro yo places popping up all over creation? I just can’t imagine they’ll be around for long and I imagine demand will decrease considerably in the winter, no?
As far as my review of Silver Spoons, it sounds as if I condemned them- I did not and will likely be back there before the weather turns cold. I thought my chosen flavor (blueberry) was a touch sweet but not bad. The missus liked it, and she isn’t much of a ’sweets’ person, so…
Anyhow, I should also reiterate that I was on the heels of several drinks and my judgment might have been a touch impaired. I do stand by my assertion that $4.06 was a lot to pay for what I got.
I can’t figure out how these frozen yogurt places stay in business in the first place.
Calling the store Silver Spoon is not the way toward endearing the owners to the nabe . Can’t we just get a run-of-the-mill ice cream shop?
#3 so funny I just went to that site in my daily net surfing right before I read your comment.
it’s funny that white people love frozen yogurt so much when the blacks look so much better licking it, CDawg
I remember when TCBY was all the rage where I grew up in NJ, it’s like they made a new invention when they called it fro-yo. To me it’s still…. eh.
TCBY = This Could Be Yogurt
I’m not discerning- I don’t care what you call it. I like ice cream, soft serve, fro-yo, gelato, flavor ice, Hawaiian shave ice, popsicles, fudgecicles. You name it.
I especially appreciate Tasty D’Lite ( or however it’s spelled) although I know it’s pretty far removed from actual ‘food’ as food is defined. Odd stuff, that but somehow I love it. I’d be just as happy if a TCBY or a Tasty D opened up there.
HofW,
So I assume the taste is sweet and not tart?
the “new” fro-yo is actually MUCH different that everybody’s memories – Pinkberry started the trend – it is a very natural tasting yogurt – not very sweet – it is HIGHLY addictive. and all the toppings just make it more fun. seriously, you just have to try it.
Pinkberry is on the sketch side: http://la.eater.com/archives/2008/04/10/pinkberry_settles_lawsuit_finally_lists_all_ingredients.php
No, thanks!
Rumor has it that an Ethipian restaurant is going in at the New Orleans space.
Winter will come for frozen yogurt operators and their profits will close with them. Pinkberry was novel and could have stood alone, but the others have no chance. oh, and the stuff is not really good. Ice cream is good.
ah an ethiopian spot would be amazing to have in the area.
Apparently they are turning the old flower shop on fulton and Cambridge into a bodega – as if that area really needs like 6 of them.
Any word on when “choice Greene” is slated to open?
I was ridiculously excited when I saw Silver Spoons. I tried it and it was pretty good. I agree with the person who said the new fro-yo isn’t an eighties throwback. Or, rather it IS a throwback to when the stuff was first first introduced and actually tasted a bit like real yoghurt.
Anyway, there seems to be two tiers of these places that open. One has good taste and nice decor, the other is a little mass market and kitschy. We’re lucky to have gotten one of the good places.
I’m sure the frozen yougurt place will fill up with all the breast feeders in the neighborhood so we can all trip over the strollers trying to get in. However I wish them all the best. I do wish them the best and for all the cheapies they should try it! it gets the taste of Ramen Noodles out of your head.
The Blueberry flavor is amazing. With some fresh strawberry and oreos. . . yum! I saw that they have coffee flavor too.
ditto on the New Orleans place, had no real problem with it, then again never really spent time there….it was n ice to look at. But i never seemed happening enough. Im shocked it was still their myself
