Soft Opening For the Public on Sunday, February 15th, from 5pm ‘til Late! (All are welcome!)
If you’ve been wondering what was happening at 247 Dekalb (between Vanderbilt and Clermont), the answer was worth the wait — Brooklyn Public House will offer simple quality pub fare, 16 beers on tap, and classic cocktails, all in the first floor of a beautifully restored brownstone. I sat down with business partners Kevin Lunney and Gerry Rooney to learn more about their venture.
(Chris Morgan is also a partner, and Chef John Parlatore will be running the kitchen). The three partners met while working together in Manhattan. Kevin and Chris both live in the Fort Greene area. Here’s what we talked about:
Bar, restaurant, both?
Both. It’s a gastropub so the focus is on the food and the beverages. The front room is more of a bar area; it has a 30 ft. bar, high tables, and two banquets in the windows. The back room has a number of cozy booths and wooden tables, and will have more of a dining room feel.
The food
Comfort food; no pretense, just good home style cooking. The menu consists of straightforward appetizers, sandwiches, lots of burgers and toppings, entrees and salads, such as artichoke dip, fish and chips, pot pies, mac and cheese, and cast iron pizzas (cooked in cast iron pans).
The drink
They’ll have 16 beers on tap, including their own brew, Brooklyn Public House Ale. A note for beer aficionados: They’ll be using a nitrogen port to carbonate the beer on tap, as opposed to CO2, so no flat beer here. There will be classic American cocktails and wine as well.
The décor (and some history)
The main portion of the building dates back to the 1850s, most likely around 1858. The building used to be an old candy shop during Prohibition, and while renovating Kevin, Chris and Gerry found old pulleys used to transport the candy up from the basement.
They also found old posters and newspapers (and even a mirror) dating back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, which you’ll see hanging throughout the pub. If you look closely at some of the walls, you can just make out the text of old newspapers that papered the walls at some point during the building’s history. Another find: Old opium bottles from Behrens pharmacy, just down the block, probably from the mid 1800’s, when opium was legal.
The ceilings in the bar area are the original tin, and the tables in the back room were made using original wood flooring from the building. (Just try to pick one up, they weigh a ton.) The benches along one of the walls in the back room came from an old monastery in Manhattan.

Great news! I hope they have fisherman’s pie. I predict this place will do well. Now we just need something to open in the Cellar’s and L’Epicerie spots.
incredibly excited about this! let’s make it succeed!!
great news.
I’m really excited to hear this. This is a GREAT addition to the neighborhood.
Awesome. Kind of incredible that the neighborhood doesn’t have anything like this already.
YAY!
that’s great! can’t wait to check the place out.
Excellent news! Any thought to having some televisions to watch major sporting events?
@ #8 Smith: Mullane’s isn’t terrible for stuff like that. I’d guess that a TV (or multiple TVs) would ruin what they’re going for at BPH.
This is great! I’ve been wanting a bar/grill in the vein of Teddy’s to open in the hood for a long time. I hope they have a happy hour.
I walked by this place the other day and it looked really nice. Sorry CDawgg, Mullane’s food is usually disappointing and we definitely need more than one pub in the hood! P.S. I’m sick of all the expensive burgers around here. If I’m going to pay $12 for a burger it better be made from filet mignon and truffle sauce or sumthin’!
@ #11 KooKoo: Read my post again, and see that I was answering Smith about watching games on TVs.
The opening of a decent pub in the neighborhood is great news. There’s no excuse for Alibi. Know anyone who wants to open a grocery?
TVs KILL the atmosphere of so many good looking spots (see: The Speakeasy, Red Bamboo etc…)
If you want to watch an event on a TV, stay home and invite people over or go to a local bar like Alibi or Mulanes.
YAY! I’ve been waiting for a cozy spot with a large selection of beers to open in the neigborhood. Best news all day! Sometimes it’s the little things…
all will be poured with nitro? that is customary for guinness, boddington’s, etc, but everything? it makes beers seem to have body they don’t, and nitrogen escapes much faster from beer than CO2. strange
yes! i passed the building today on the bus, and while stopped at the vanderbilt stop i noticed the signs of a new restaurant. I’m working on valentines, so this could be perfect for the next night. I’m all set with places that give you a $7 beer in an 10 oz. jelly jar.
I am excited about this opening! I have a good feeling about this place that it’s going to settle into the nieghborhood like a comfy old shoe. And to all the cheapasses in the hood, stay the fuck home cause your fat ass is just going to take up space here!
I walked by the yesterday. Its a ton of space which is great.
@myrtle mer, that’s the worst thing at General Greene those f*@#$! jelly jars they serve beer in.
holy fuck!!! yes!
I am so freaking stoked about a regular bar being in the area. I’ve lived here for a year now and have always had to travel to other areas of Bklyn to have a beer in a ‘pub’. Our area is great but all we have is shi-shi places to drink. I’ve gone to General Greene..whack! I’ve gone to Alibi..na-sty (and I like dives but damn)! Bonita, please they don’t even have taps and isn’t mexican food suppose to be cheap, rather go to Castro’s. The Hideout….hum not with my money! Thank you Public for helping the area out with a ‘bar’ bar and not a faux bar.
Did someone say Fish n’ Chips? I HOPE . 16 Beers on tap…what are they? Cant wait. I do hope its not a $7 $8 or $9 a pint. Whatever, I wish them the best.
I walked by this morning and the construction shed is down, everything is now revealed and place looks FANTASTIC. Walk down Dekalb and take a peep. Great job, fellas! Can’t wait to sit down and have a pint (or twelve)
It was open last night.
Caught the bus right in front today, and it indeed looked open, and super nice. Stoked!
I went there last night. I was really excited to finally have a regular, low key pub in the area. But a Guinness is $6.50? A 12 oz Stella is $6.00? Nachos are $12? Ridiculous.
Rope has recession specials, $4 pints.
I’m just glad the scaffolding is down. That building as been being torn up and worked on since I lived around the corner from there, and that was four years ago!
Went last night and it was fairly busy. Just had a couple drinks, no food. The owners seem great. My only beef is that the lights were too bright and the music was kinda bad … Crash Test Dummies’ “once there was this kid” … ’nuff said. If someone can introduce a dimmer switch and Pandora to this place, it’ll be a great neighborhood bar.
I went last night, too. We had burgers . . . good, but THICK. Almost too thick to fit into your mouth! They were still ironing out some kinks and made some mistakes, but were quick to apologize and sort things out, so I’ll be back.
Went Sat night. I agree that it’s bright, but it’s a cool space. I’ll be returning.
A “nitrogen port”? I have a suspicion that this is the stuff they use to perk up mass-produced beer in England, since it makes it easier to keep than proper beer, which relies on the natural carbonation that happens during fermentation. So we’re talking about a method that makes the beer taste like bad English beer rather than bad American beer, which may be an improvement, depending on your prejudices.
We were dying to go on Monday afternoon at 4 when they were supposed to open. They weren’t open yet and there were TONS of people trying to get in. We can’t wait to go, but would like to see the real hours posted. Looks like a great spot.
their beer list is pretty pedestrian–if you are going to have 16 taps or whatever, you might as well fill them with beers that taste different from each other.
Seriously, pull a page from the Mugs Alehouse playbook up in Williamsburg.
i heard the angels signing when i saw this this morning on the way to the subway….i thank the pub gods!
This is the douchiest bar I’ve ever been to in my entire life. It is so bad that after living here for 8 years and loving Fort Geeene it makes me seriously question what this neighbborhood is becoming. It makes me seriously consider whether or not I should sell my place and move.
A Sordid Lawsuit Shakes the Satmar Chasidic world .
Brooklyn N.Y. @ 36.
That’s literally the exact same thing you wrote on nymag’s page. Do you work for Alibi or have you never been to a bar in Manhattan before?
This place looks great…I love Mullanes for Happy Hour so they will have to win me over with something. Who goes to Alibi?? It smells like a urinal.
Wish these guys the best.I grew up with Chris (one of the owners)in Texas and im thrilled to se the end result of his first bar venture. We have kept in touch since he moved to New York 9 yrs ago,and hes been busting his ass on this project for close to a year. I hope they make it.Hopefully I`ll get to come se it sometime.
I don’t get it. How do you open up in Ft. Greene without a decent happy hour? With beers that cost $6 or more, and gimmick food? Its a beautiful space but I feel that renovation means a surplus tax on the beer! Kinda the opposite of “prohibition-era”. Come on Chip, you’re spot has so much potential, get your sh*t together, invite people in with inviting prices, not gimmicks.
Too cha ching for me. Tara don’t leave Mullanes, at least they have a happy hour.
Went for the first time last night. I liked the place. I don’t drink so the beer selection doesn’t mean much to me. I had the fish & chips which was good but a bit overpriced ($14). Friends had the bar dog and the burgers which they loved.
