A week or so ago, a reader notified me that Fish and Crustaceans on Fulton had been shut down. Sure enough, this is what I saw when I walked by:

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about the food?

I liked the whiting sandwich with cockroach mayo.
went in once. didnt buy a thing since the service was nonexistent. it was probably a one-off, but I never went back.
Now if only the Country Diner would closed and be replaced by a nice cleaner restaurant.
You know, I actually liked this place a lot and I thought the service was friendly and inviting (though they were all young guys and I’m a young lady). I’m sad they are closing!
I liked this place way back when the owner and his family used to manage and do the cooking. As the years went by I noticed he let support staff take over and the quality went downhill.
Neighbor, I agree and it was very noticeable. And sorry to disapoint folks but the country house aint going nowhere.
I liked the folks who ran this place, I loved the fish and chips, and I was very sad to see it closed (a number of weeks ago). Number 5, I think you must be thinking of another place — Fish & Crustaceans was a fairly new store.
So, acording to the NOTICE they didn’t have a permit ! Not too smart. If they didn’t care about running the business without a permit what makes you think they cared about…?
I was nice to see something new like that open and as far as Country Diner I wish they would move to another country.
Seriously, outside of their food not being up to par with your taste or liking, why such harsh words for a business that has been here for decades?
@Geoff: It’s been open since 05 — hardly new
“Seriously, outside of their food not being up to par with your taste or liking, why such harsh words for a business that has been here for decades?”
…Um, isn’t “the food isn’t up to par with my liking” a good enough reason for someone to speak ill of a place? If you don’t like a place, it doesn’t matter whether or not it’s been there for decades, centuries, or minutes. The length of time it’s been there doesn’t matter — if you don’t like it, you don’t like it. Not sure where tenure enters into things.
Regarding F&C: I always had a good experience there…friendly owners and fried goodness. I was sad to see them go.
Regarding Country House: I personally don’t like it but it’s cheap…it’s open 24 hrs…and it’s a neighborhood institution. It’s the dive bar of diners. Not every place in our hood needs to be a upscale cafe. I don’t think you have to like it to appreciate it’s value to other people.
‘Fish and Crustaceans’. I never went in as I really don’t care for fish or crustaceans, but I did laugh every time I passed. That has to be the worst and least original business name name EVER!
I’m continually amused and perplexed by the attitudes of the many who will cheerfully give shitty businesses a pass simply because they’re ‘local’ or have been around for a long time. F&C can’t have been here for more than a few years- i remember them opening, so to claim they’ve been here for ‘decades’ is misinformation. BKNesto always likes to skew things his way- he was here before ANY of us- we’re all yuppie interlopers looking to rid his ‘hood’ of everything ‘real’.
no housewax he made a comment simple you are not yuppie’s just a bunch of CRYBABY’s if its not up to par then you start wineing and boo hooin!!!!!!
BK was speaking, I believe, of the Country House Diner, which is kinda groddy. But if some people like it they are welcome to it – lots of vacant storefronts and under-patronized spots for other establishments.
Houseowax,
I’ve never used the term yuppie or interlopers nor have I ever skewed anything. But if you want to go there about peoples intolerance for things in the neighborhood that preceded their arrival, I will gladly oblige. There’s a long list, trust me, matter of fact look for a post on CHC, where I will run it down.
The business I was referring to being here for decades was the Country House Diner. Of course people are entitled to their opinions on anyplace, but when people say things like it needs to be replaced by another restaurant or wish it would move to another country I can’t help but think there are other harbored emotions behind this sentiment. Like another comment alluded to there plenty of vacant storefronts that can be used for whatever speculative wishlist you have for Fulton street. As it is two restaurants have failed while the “Cunny” probably makes more on a weekend then this whole strip makes in a week.
Please cite examples of my skewing anything or my discord for “yuppies & interlopers”. I will gladly as stated above show peoples intolerance and discord for things that have preceded their residency in the hood.

Ok I must be the only one but I actually like Country House. They are always sooo nice to my husband, son and I when we go for breakfast on the weekend when we’re just too lazy to cook. Yeah it’s not gourmet but where else can you get breakfast for $3? I’m so sick of these overpriced overhyped restaurants that keep opening in the hood. Can we please keep just one cheap diner?
As for F&C, again I actually liked the shrimp. It satisfied my greesy fried fish cravings. Yes service was awful though.
As VanderMom just stated, could we please have have less of the “overpriced overhyped restaurants that keep opening in the hood”. Enough is enough.
The food never looked appealing, the place looked dirty, and regardless, i was scared to go there because a guy was shot to death coming out of it in broad daylight a year or so ago…
