Fort Greene’s beer garden is open, on Fulton at South Oxford. I checked it out last night.
On the summer’s first true steamy day, Der Schwarze Kolner was perhaps even hotter on the inside than on the outside, despite large, open windows. It was also loud — we wondered if the bad acoustics were attributed to the lack of wall decor. But the prices were not too bad- I had a fancy filtered wheat beer for… $5?… and a kielbasa on a toasted roll for $4. Both were delicious.
Not bad for being open for just a few days (dude! cash only, again!). But before I’d go back, a ceiling fan would be nice — that is, if summer is here to stay,

how large was your $4 beer? the local mentioned $8 for 500ml which is expensive regardless of the brand.
most beers there are $6 for 0.5L. a few are $7 or $8.
So i’ve got a description on a person who tried to steal my bike today… sorry to sully the highlight on the beer garden.
If anyone sees a light skin, hispanic man (with a faux hawk) wearing a white t-shirt, about 5’6″ riding a WOMEN’S Blue and white or silver commuter bike, He’s riding around looking to steal bikes. By divine intervention mine wasn’t stolen but he cut my chain.
Thanks!
I was really excited about this new beer garden (Hall actually, why didn’t they call this a beer hall?). But it looks pretty sparse now that its open, and almost cold. It didn’t look all that inviting. Maybe they will add more decor and a few more tables. I am definitely going to try it – that kielbasa looks amazing. But I am just shocked at the lack of decor or ambiance.
According to the local they are awaiting decorations that are being shipped from Germany.
Yeah, oops. I just read The Local’s review and they said decorations are the way and there will be an actual garden in the back.
Sorry!
god. that picture looks like a poopie on a roll.
Friends of mine went last night and loved it. I plan to try it out on Friday anyone interested is having a beer?
Come on, give the cash only thing a break. Restaurants run on razor-thin margins, and the fees credit card companies charge are no joke. I think going to the ATM is a small price to pay to have great, independently-owned places to eat.
I agree it’s more like a hall. However, they have GREAT beer choices. I’m glad to have them around.
