Essential Cakes, on Fulton near Waverly (near the skinny condo) has been open for a few weeks now. Have you been? How does it rate?
It has been closed the last few times I have walked by (early in the morning), but I’m going to try to get there some weekend or evening to check it out soon.

everytime I passed the store – they were closed.
I tried them once, the cupcakes were very small and much too expensive. I have no problems paying for things – hey I sometimes shop at Whole Foods, but the value of the cupcake was not worth it.
Too bad, you really want something to succeed on this part of Fulton Street.

I can give them a glowing review.
I had seen the store and decided to support a new business and I ordered a Red Velvet Cake for my boyfriend’s birthday and it was GREAT! I’ve had some red velvet cakes that can be a bit dense, but this was so light, moist and fluffy. I had 12 people over for the birthday and they all loved it.
I saw the cupcakes and I’ll admit they’re a bit small for the price. However, I don’t think they are that much difference in size between theirs and Desserts By Michael Allen’s (which has some great baked goods).
I’ve tried them twice and have been disappointed both times. The cupcakes were small, dry and overpriced. I’d rather go to Downtown Atlantic or Betty’s and get a much better and bigger cupcake for basically the same price.
It’s too bad because Fulton could really use a decent bakery/coffee shop. Unfortunately, Essential Cakes is neither.
Try the bakery on Vanderbilt near Myrtle, across from Chase Bank.
I went there today and it was just okay. I ordered a red velvet cupcake and a carrot cake cupcake (what can I say, I love cupcakes). They both had nice texture, the frosting was light and the cake was not too dense and moist. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough flavor in either. They barely tasted like anything. If they can step up their taste game, I will definitely go back there.
They don’t open until 11, which doesn’t seem ideal, but then again, its not exactly breakfast food. I’ve had the cupcakes and they’re tasty, but nothing special and they are small. I but they’re cakes to order are good, but personally I prefer the variety of the goods at Michael Allen and just wish they were on my way to the subway.
I hope they can survive unlike the businesses that were there before them. The cupcakes are okay, nothing to run over the hill for. I called them one day for a cake that can feed 12 people. Guess what? they didn’t have any.
