Sunday morning I walked over to Choice to enjoy my favorite weekend indulgence- a chocolate croissant while walking the dog. While there, I wondered how Choice Atlantic was faring. I had almost forgotten about stumbling across it earlier this year with glee. So, I headed down to Atlantic, only to find it was closed! A quick blog search found notice of the closure on Eater and Brownstoner mentioned as being “temporary” back in late August – early September. Not so good for an outpost that just opened up earlier this year.

Despite things looking up for Atlantic Avenue in the last few years, it seems to have petered out. Frank White claimed to have just moved just down the street, but I can never seem to find it when I drive by. And remember that fresh fruit shop on Atlantic back in 2008? That came and went like lightening.

Choice opened the Atlantic place up so they could have a catering headquarters — the little storefront for baked goods isn’t worth the seven bucks an hour you’d have to pay someone to run it.
But for all these places that choose Atlantic and cheaper rent over Fulton — you would have slam dunked on Fulton. Frank White, fruit guy, Choice, etc… the street and its clientele are ready. No one walks on Atlantic.
It’s interesting, because CA is actually closer to me (I think?) than CM (I live at Madison/Franklin). But I never went to CA. I think I honestly just prefer the walk and view of that part of Fort Greene/Clinton Hill more than Atlantic. Tis true, Atlantic isn’t the prettiest strolling spot.
[...] closing notices appear: Clinton Hill Blog keeps us updated, noticing a “Store Closed” sign at Choice [...]
Atlantic Ave is a major road. I would not venture down there for food unless I wanted the wonderful smell of exhaust to go along with it. I thought it was a great idea for a cheap catering space but I guess business was not great. I love choice and choice market, I am happy to see them thrive. I never been to the depot and won’t miss it. I am just happy they still have 2 quality places that I can shop at. Atlantic Ave is a hard place to have a business unless you fix cars. The only reason I go down there is to my mechanic and to the autozone.
when i lived in the 11238 [now, im back in the 11205] i tried stopping by Choice Atlantic about 6 months ago after work one day and i was sad to see that they closed early in the day. then i never went back. but i do still stop by Choice Market and even their tables at the Brooklyn Flea. Halloween weekend, i bought a few delectible chocolate chip cookies and asked about Choice Atlantic. The storefront is now closed. But they are still using the space for Head Quarters and bakery. And he also reminded me that the latest installment of Choice will be opening in DUMBO very soon, on Jay St – near the York St F station. And he handed me a take-out/delivery menu for Choice Market.
Okay, I’m glad it’s not just me. I keep looking for Frank White and telling people I heard they opened a new place but no one else seems to know about it. Hope we hear something from them eventually. . .
Oh wow, in DUMBO? That’s pretty smart, especially with the food beyond baked goods they offer. I know Almondine will be competition, but good for Choice. I’m so glad they finally printed up take-out menus, too!
How about a Choice Dekalb at the old Picnic / Urban Spring spot. I would love an outpost closer to my neck of the woods!
it was a terrible idea from the start… the area has gentrified immensely, but not enough to have a specialty food store with those price points
yea, emily – almondine is still superior. i just had a lovely almond croissant and mulligatawny soup today [i work in the area]. so good.
