The Golden Girls on Clinton Avenue

Clinton Hill Chill is a wealth of information about movies and music that originated in the neighborhood.  In a post from last month, he calls out an episode of the Golden Girls, where Dorothy takes Sophia back to the “old neighborhood” in Brooklyn to help jog her memory.  The episode: “Clinton Avenue Memoirs!”

Who didn’t love watching GG back in the day?  I never imagined as a child that I’d be living on the same street that Dorothy Zbornak grew up on.

Filming Tomorrow: Boardwalk Empire

“Boardwalk Empire,” a new HBO series, will be filming tomorrow on Clinton Ave.  I know it’s dorky, but I still get excited when I see TV shows and movies being filmed in the city.

Here’s the DL from Wikipedia:

Boardwalk Empire is an upcoming American television series from premium cable network HBO, set in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the Prohibition era. The show is adapted from Nelson Johnson’s book, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City by Emmy award-winning screenwriter and producer Terence Winter of The Sopranos.
The pilot episode was directed by Martin Scorsese and he is expected to continue to be creatively involved in the ongoing production. On September 1, 2009, HBO picked up the series for an additional 11 episodes, making the first season 12 episodes long, including the pilot. HBO has stated that the series will debut in the fall of 2010.

I hope we see Steve Buscemi in the hood!  But set in Atlantic City?  Hmm…

(Speaking of filming, “Damages” has been filming in the nabe quite often.  I haven’t seen it, but I hear the first season is awesome.  I’ll add it to the Netflix.)

Miranda, Steve and Brady Return to Clinton Hill

As many readers know, the brownstone used as Miranda and Steve’s home on Sex and the City (both the TV show and the first movie) is located on DeKalb Avenue between Washington and Waverly.

The movie sequel is currently filming in Manhattan, but the crews are scheduled to return to DeKalb next week.  Prop load-in is taking place this week, and filming is slated to take place over the following two weeks.

Maybe the ladies would like to meet CHB for a local cosmo?

Tish James Wants to Name Hoyt-Schermerhorn Station after Michael Jackson

Thanks to neighbor Kath for sending me this story via the HuffPost:

NEW YORK — A New York City lawmaker wants to see Michael Jackson honored at a subway station where the star made the music video for “Bad.”

Councilwoman Letitia James wants a plaque placed at Brooklyn’s Hoyt-Schermerhorn station – or to have “Jackson” added to the station’s name.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Kevin Ortiz said Monday it’s unlikely. James, undeterred, plans a petition drive.

I know that station is not in our neighborhood, but many of us use it every day on the way to and from work.  I was just asking my fiance where he thought Bad was filmed last time we saw it on TV.

Kitchen Nightmares: Filming NOW at Mohito on Washington

I love TV, but I have to admit I’ve never heard of this one before.  Per Wikipedia, “Kitchen Nightmares or Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA is an American reality television series on the Fox Broadcasting network, in which chef Gordon Ramsay helps failing restaurants.”

This very second, the show is filming at Mohito on Washington north of Park.

A CH reader reports that she “overheard the staff last night bitching about how Ramsay is changing Mojitos menu, cursing at the staff…”

I haven’t heard anythink about them being in dire trouble, but have heard very mixed reviews.  My experiences have been mostly good.

Recent Filming

Saw this signage last week on Myrtle near Waverly:

Nothing posted to IMBD (unusual), but did fine this info here:

‘IT’S ALL BEEN ARRANGED’ traces four intersecting stories, each exploring different aspects of love and companionship, as four friends struggle to find their way through the meanders of Indian matrimony, in a bittersweet attempt to combine their deep-rooted tradition and ‘modern’ New York life in perfect harmony.

Notorious, the movie based on the life of the Notorious BIG / Biggie Small and filmed in the neighborhood, opened last Friday.  The Times offers an interesting article on the film, with some rich history about Biggie’s life and the neighborhood.

Biggie grew up on St. James Place, and there is some differences of opinion on whether or not the area was called Clinton Hill back then.  (The Times seems to think it wasn’t.)  My research suggests that Clinton Hill is NOT a new-fangled real estate broker creation, and St. James Place is firmly within the borders of Clinton Hill. Long-time residents, please chime in!  Did you refer to the area as Bed-Stuy?

I was in college when Biggie was killed, and had no idea he was just 24 when he died.

Has anyone seen the movie yet?  I hope to this weekend.

Planet Green Casting

Normally, I try to stick to CH-based events, but a TV show casting focusing on green living recently popped into my inbox and it sounded interesting (and like a good opportunity to showcase our beautiful neighborhood!).  Plus, participants will learn how to incorporate green techniques into their everyday lives and have the potential to win money!  And who doesn’t want some money right now, right?

Wa$ted is an eco-green, home makeover show.  We are currently casting our 2nd season and we are looking for energetic, unique, and diverse households in and around the tri-state area that might be interested in learning how to be a bit more green. Our mission is to show the viewing audience and the show’s participants’ ways and means by which they can reduce their impact on the environment and frequently save money in the doing. The program is fun but with a clear message.  I am reaching out to you for help spreading the word about this unique opportunity among your readers and the Clinton Hill Community.

If you think this is something either you or your readers might be interested in it would be great if you could pass along our official casting call or post it to your blog.  The ideal households are those who may not want to go green or are hesitant to buy into the green movement or maybe they are interested in being green but feel overwhelmed by all the information and options that are out there.  I’d be pleased to explain the details with you further if you would like.  So please feel free to give me a call or email and we can discuss the show in greater detail.  In the meantime, I am including below a brief description of the show and what it entails along with a link to the Planet Green website.

Wa$ted is in its 2nd season for Discovery’s Planet Green.  The goal of the show is to teach people to be less wasteful and to be more green.  Our hosts, Annabelle Gurwitch and Holter Graham, want to show people how easy and fun it can be to save the environment and save money.  We want to show that through some simple changes to your house and your lifestyle you can reduce your carbon footprint and save money without sacrificing your luxury and comfort. The eco-makeover will involve lifestyle tips, cool gadgets and products, and superficial changes to the home.  And the best part – we help you save MONEY!  With the potential to WIN money based on your success.  Wa$ted focuses on a spectrum of environmental issues within households from their waste, energy, water and transportation consumption.  With the help of our green experts we narrow in on certain problems facing each family that are both hurting the environment and the homeowner’s bank account. Each episode offers dozens of customized, unconventional solutions in the form of appliances, gadgets and easy-to-maintain tips and tricks on how to best shrink ecological footprints, conserve energy and produce less trash, which in turn saves the homeowners (and viewers) some serious cash, both upfront and over the years.
