Food Co-Op Meeting: TOMORROW

All, The next co-op meeting is coming right up on July 9th. As decided at the General Meeting on June 17, this meeting will not follow the General Meeting structure and instead will take the form of a general discussion about the work of the various committees, cross-cutting issues, and what decisions are on the horizon. The Governance Committee would like to suggest that special attention be given to the question of working v. non-working co-op (although since it's not a General Meeting, there will be no decision-making process).

In anticipation of this meeting, we'd like to ask each committee to prepare a summary of what you have been doing and what you have planned for the coming months. These summaries will be compiled and distributed prior to the meeting. This will give everyone a chance to update themselves on the work of each committee and will leave more time at the meeting for broader discussion and collaboration.

Please send your written summaries to Nick Collins (nickdcollins@gmail.com) by July 3rd. Committees may also send other agenda items to Nick for discussion.

Meeting details:

Wednesday, July 9th, 7-9pm

Queen of All Saints Church, Vanderbilt and Lafayette

See you then,

July 4 Party at Tamboril!

Need a plan for Friday night? Tamboril is hosting a party complete with an art show, live music and DJs. Could be a good place to meet some new people and dance until the wee hours to celebrate our nation's independence. Not to mention all that tasty food (coconut shrimp, hello). The event starts at 10:30 -- AFTER the fireworks -- so no excuse not to boogie locally.july-4th-2.jpg

Troubles at the CH Library? (And How to Help!)

I received a distressing email from reader Rory this morning about the struggling CH library on Washington Ave: Any idea what's been happening lately with my beloved little Clinton Hill Library? The last few days, I've trekked up there, only to find the lights off, the gate locked and a sad print-out sign saying that the temperature inside had reached 83* at so-and-so a time (roughly early-afternoon) and they had closed early. It's pretty clear to anybody who even walks by the operating budget is pretty meager, and certainly no one likes a sweaty librarian - but at the same time, they're already open so few hours a week (especially for anyone who works a regular 9-5 job!) and to be closed for most of their one weekend slot and then again the following Monday night (the only late-night hours), well, it's a bit disheartening to see their community access so limited. My guess is that their air conditioning must be broken, but I fear that with the BPL's budgets, it could be ages before it's fixed and they return to regular operating hours. Maybe we could we start a community donation fund, to help them get it back up-'n-running soon?

As the son of a librarian and a regular patron of the CH Library (with several books behind held hostage behind the locked gate!), I'm keen to not see the nabe's literacy compromised until the temps drop in October... So I'm hoping you might know something, or could post a message on the CHB to galvanize the troops? (I think the gal who was starting the Friends of the CH Library is imminently moving back to Ohio, so not sure where that all stands?)

Yes, the Prez of the Friends of Clinton Hill Library is moving to Ohio, but there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer this summer and fall. Right now, they're seeking gardening volunteers, and they tell me exciting things are coming this fall (info to come). For now, contact the outgoing president at lizabeephoto@yahoo.com.

I'm not sure what the answer is regarding finding for the library, but I'm sure something could be done.  A bake sale, an art sale, a collection, or maybe a sponsor.  Perhaps the vendors/staff at the Brooklyn Flea could be convinced to donate 10% of revenue on one particular day to the library fund.  Maybe we can do a CH Restaurant Week where proceeds go to the library fund.

If you have ideas, bring them to the Friends group.  It would be awfully nice to have extended hours!

If you haven't checked out the library before, definitely stop in (if you can catch it open).  I know they even have some fun programming, like Scrabble night.  Fun!

Bar Olivino

library-8647.jpg

It's open!!!!

I checked it out last week. The space is very teeny, but gorgeously designed. The bar was filled with a good cross-section of neighbors, and the wine list was descriptive.

For now, they are giving out free cheese plates but plan to have a more full cheese-meat menu soon.

Fingers crossed that they do well. It's so close to the C train entrance! Very convenient for an after-work glass of wine. I know I need them often.

BREAKING: Myrtle Ave Citibank Robbery

"Hey Robin, Did you hear that the Citibank on Myrtle and Clinton was robbed this afternoon, at 3pm? I was walking by, and I saw all the commotion. Now the tellers are closed, but the atms are still open. There are signs that say because of an emergency, the bank is closed. I went inside at around 4:30 to get some cash out, and there were some plain clothed officers inside talking to the employees.

Scary!

Beloved Bar Closing

I have received word from TWO different sources that Grand 275 (located at 275 Grands, obvs) is closing. Fear not -- it doesn't seem to be an issue with poor business or rent increases, but more that the owners are ready to do something new (hopefully in the same space?).

Apparently these last few nights have been packed.  The final night of operation will be Friday. Get your drink on, one last time, at this super comfortable, friendly spot.

More General Greene Info

On an ambitions jog last night, I noticed that the door to The General Greene was open. Inside, a lone woman worked on a laptop. Of course, I walked right in. Turns out she's the manager, and she had good news! The space will be open tomorrow night after 9pm, as well as over the weekend, for drinks and bar snacks. The official opening will be TUESDAY, JULY 1.

A reader who checked it out last weekend described the beer selection as being "great (small but delicious)," and said the eggplant spread was "pretty tasty."

The General Greene!

library-9008.jpg Several of you emailed me over the weekend about the former June space, which has suddenly turned into a new restaurant: The General Greene!

library-9007.jpg

I have to say, this place seems like it has the potential to be pretty cool.  First, the name: a play on a general store / outpost AND a shout-out to General Nathanael Greene for whom the neighborhood and park are named.

Inside, it looks bright and airy:

Apparently it was open this past weekend for a sneak peek.  Anyone go??? It wasn't open Monday or Tuesday.  (Believe me, I have been walking by incessantly.)

I received an email that two different MoveOn groups are hosting Bakesales this weekend for the Obama campaign.  Being that Clinton Hill had the highest percentage of Obama voters, I thought you all might be interested: Saturday, 21 Jun 2008, 11:00 AM

Historic Fort Greene - Clinton Hill Walking Tour

Fort Greene and Clinton Hill have been selected to have their very own Big Onion Walking Tour! And it starts this weekend!! There has long been a BK Heights-Fort Greene tour run by a local resident, but it was very BK Heights-centric. I'm really psyched to try this new tour out and see what I learn. Here is the press release: Fort Greene Neighborhood Groups Win Big Onion Walking Tour BEDC Announces Winner of the Brooklyn Neighborhood Tourism Initiative - First Tour held on Saturday, June 21st

Brooklyn, NY, May {16}, 2008 ─ The Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) announced the winning neighborhood for the first ever Brooklyn Neighborhood Tourism Initiative. And the winner is… Fort Greene/Clinton Hill! This heterogeneous community, just east of downtown Brooklyn, boasts majestic brownstones, pre-Civil War frame houses, lively shopping areas, historical churches and world-renowned cultural institutions, and will now feature a series of walking tours to present these treasures to visitors.

Joan Bartolomeo, President of BEDC, announced, “Fort Greene is a community that is both unique and quintessentially New York. We are excited to partner with Big Onion Walking Tours to make this vibrant Brooklyn community a primary destination for tourists and New York residents alike.”

Big Onion Walking Tours, in business for over fifteen years, is among New York City’s leading tour groups. Big Onion Walking Tours President, Seth Kamil said, “Fort Greene lends itself perfectly to the breed of tours we offer. Our guides specialize in peeling back the many layers of history that make up the fabric of our city. Fort Greene is rich with cultural, literary and architectural record, as well as unknown treasures we plan to reveal. I look forward to working with the winning community organizations to create a tour that is thought-provoking and exciting.”

The Brooklyn Neighborhood Tourism Initiative Contest was open to more than 100 community organizations served by BEDC’s Re-NEW Brooklyn Program, which works to promote strong and vibrant commercial corridors as the backbone of Brooklyn’s neighborhoods. Applicants were asked to demonstrate that their community is of historic and architectural interest and has a vibrant commercial corridor that would benefit from the additional foot traffic drawn in by walking tours.

From the applications, BEDC and Big Onion Walking Tours selected three local organizations they will cooperate with to design a tour: The Fort Greene Association, the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, and (jointly) the Pratt Area Community Council and Fulton Area Business Association. BEDC will fund the research and development of the 90-minute walking tour, while the local organizations will assist in tour development and growth.

“We are very pleased to launch our Tourism Initiative in Fort Greene/Clinton HIll,” said Matthew Rao, BEDC’s Director of Commercial Revitalization. “It has a plethora of high-quality historic and contemporary attractions as well as three flourishing main business corridors: Fulton/Lafayette Streets, Dekalb Avenue and Myrtle Avenue.”

Dale Charles, Economic Development Program Manager at the Pratt Area Community Council, said, “Fort Greene has some of the oldest houses in the borough, as well as historic Fort Greene Park, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and revolutionary and civil war era historic sites. The active commercial corridors of Fort Greene/Clinton Hill feature minority and women-owned businesses and a famous Afro-centric fashion industry that help make our neighborhood special.”

M. Blaise Backer, Executive Director of the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, said, “Myrtle Avenue was once the Main Street of the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill community, but it went into decline during the 1970’s. Today, Myrtle Avenue is regaining its role as a bustling commercial corridor.” Backer adds that the neighborhood is so rich in history that “any number of tours could be designed here, based on everything from the area’s military history to the emergence of Fort Greene as a stronghold for African American culture and community.”

An architecture critic once wrote of Fort Greene, “Better than this it does not get.” BEDC and Big Onion Tours hope that this series of walking tours will reveal the beauty, history and vitality of the neighborhood to a wider audience.

The Historic Fort Greene Walking Tour will be held regularly, with the first tour held on Saturday, June 21st, at 1pm. The tour will meet at the southeast corner of Flatbush Avenue & Hanson Place, under the large red BAM sign. Admission to the tour is $15 for adults and $12 for seniors, students, and NYHS members. For more information and tour schedules, please see www.bigonion.com or www.bedc.org.

BEDC, a private, non-profit, organization, was established in 1979 to stimulate Brooklyn’s economy and create job opportunities for Brooklyn residents. More information on BEDC’s programs and services can be found at www.bedc.org.

Cops Read Blogs!!

Many thanks to reader Philip for emailing me a camera phone picture of the cop cars in front of the 88th precinct on DeKalb Avenue at Classon.  After I posted about their cars blocking the street's new bike lane, they've switched to regular old parallel parking (you know, like the rest of us have to!). sspx0008.jpg

Thanks also to Gothamist and Streetsblog (and I'm sure many others) for picking up this story.

Let's hope this is a permanent gesture.  It's days like today that I'm really psyched to be a community blogger.  (BTW, where did they put the other cars?)

Why We Need Root Stock & Quade in the 'Hood

I know there's been some mixed opinions on the price points at Root Stock & Quade on Myrtle, but I for one am thrilled to have them nearby, even if I can only buy a bouquet there every once and a while. While walking down Myrtle near Hall this past weekend, I noticed these flowers for sale at a bodega:

Those purple flowers? Yeah, they're half dead.

Bar Olivino: Is It Open?!

Brownstoner told us recently that Olivino was slated to open a new wine bar on Fulton! Looks like it's nearing completion:

chb-10.jpg

A few of you have emailed me, saying they're already open.  This seems odd, as I'm on their email list and I don't recall receiving any notice.  Maybe it's a soft opening?

The new bar is just a few storefronts west of Olivino's Fulton Ave location (between Clinton and Vanderbilt).

I, for one, am looking very forward to this.
